In the owners manual for my 02 ST it says there is a sight glass for the oil level below the filler cap. There isn t one on my bike however.
The oil filler plug has markings on a dipstick though.Im guessing you check the oil level without screwing the dipstick/filler plug in.
Any one else have this setup or have you all got sight glasses?

amanger,
we here are Triumph MEN and we use a DIPSTICK! :-D :-D :-D

I beleive earlier models had that Japanese method of checking the contents of your crankcase.

But us sophisticated riders of modern Hinckley iron use a DIPSTICK

It's all good mate........... maaaate

Amanger,

The sight glass was on the -'01 model years and was discontinued for the '02+ so you need to use the dipstick. I thought the sight glass was more convenient to use as long as you had a center stand.

The manual says measurement is made with the bike straight up (not on the side stand) and by screwing the dipstick all the way in. It recommends waiting 10 minutes after shutdown to let the oil drain. It's silent on whether to use the center stand. My experience is that the center stand does not affect the results.

I have an '01 and would like to have a dipstick. Will the new ones work fine on the older models?

Why? its easier to just to look at the site glass. No unscrewing or wiping and re-screwing, and unscrewing again. Unless you just like to screw and like wiping a slippery stick.

Since the 955i engine was changed quite a bit in '02, I'm not sure a dipstick would read correctly on an older Sprint.

The dipsticks on the 01 bikes were different and cannot be interchanged. The 01's also took more oil (I think .4 litre more)

On my previous bike you could check the oil in the morning with the dipstick while standing over the bike holding it upright. I think this would be easier than throwing it up on the centerstand whenever I want to check it.

G'day Amanger.

When I first got my 02 - the book said it had a sight glass - sure enough it was not there - turns out they gave me an 01 book with my 02 bike..

Coming from a BMW background that had the sight glass, I always found that an easier option - but you get used to the screwing out, wiping, screwing in routine pretty well.

Fortunately, mine hardly uses any oil - but I still check about once a week.

Harry, you obviously never had a K1200Rs :-D You had to be like another Harry (Houdini) to even see the sightglass on them. I recall it was always a 'down on hands and knees' effort to check the oil.
