ok, nearly a week has passed since i picked up my Sprint, done 250ish klm, and still no warning light .....

i dont want to get caught somewhere without fuel, and I'd also like to "stretch" the distance so i know my range....see my dilemma ?

So, I know i should get around 300klm from a tank (03 RS) but how far-ish should i get once the idiot light comes on ? 4 klm ? 40klm ?

is there even a reserve tap ? (i havnt found it yet !)

Cheers all
J

(I"ll stop asking stupid questions soon, i promise !)

Hi Kazjim, The only stupid question is the one that you don't ask.

My idiot light comes on at about 290-300k's but I would imagine that they are all a little bit different. I normally get about 380k's out of a tank before I start to get nervous and fill up (I really get up myself when I run out of petrol).

There is no reserve tank switch.

Sorry I got confused !!

Kazjim,

The manual says there's 4 liters left when the light comes on.

In mixed riding I get 190 MILES to the reserve light. (That's 305 km) I usually have a full US gallon left in the tank (3.79L) good for about 65km.

OK Kazjim,
I'll always get over 300 till the light and I can bank on a SAFE 50 kms after that.
Mine takes 15.8 litres once the light comes on. It would be a good idea to try this with yours.
I know from past fills I can use up to 19.3L of the fuel in the tank so I know I've got 3.5L once the light comes on and the bike does over 20kpl easily enough if you're not thrashing it.
Which means 70 odd can be possible

I did 69kms on the light once but don't recommend that for your heart's sake.
I was caught between Goulburn and Canberra and just had to sit on a steady 80-85 kph and pray

G'day kazjim

A lot depends on how you ride and specially what gearing your bike has.

On my 02 ST with OEM 19/43 sprockets best I got was 520 klms on one tank - country riding, due to cops we were pretty much on the speed limit - occasional 120, 130 klm p/h but only short bursts. It had about 1/2 litre left in the tank based on the amount of fuel it took to fill..

I now have 18/45, usually ride fairly aggressively, get the light at about 330 to 350 klm and can get about 60klm before I may have to push it. ( never have yet )

Per the above, gearing and ride style can make about 20% difference.

So - suggest you take your pen and notebook when filing up, do some sums and work out your range, based on how you ride.

mine comes on at 275k or so around town in the 300s around if i recall reserve is 3 litres, and i only risk 40-to 50k while on it,and i reset the odo. on every fill up.

Kazjim,
at hwy speeds I regularly get 80K out of reserve (my commute to work) and still have between 1 & 3L left at this point.

I just came back from the island where I did a 1/2 tank fill@ Cann River and could only get std unleaded (91) not 95 RON.

I only just made it to Goulburn 378K away and put in 20.76L into the 21L tank :-) This run was sitting around 130KPH for pretty much all the way. I'd expect to get about 6% better economy if I'd been able to put 95 RON in the tank

I made it by slip streaming a 4WD on the Federal Hwy to make sure I did make it to fuel. Glad I did as I wouldn't have got to the petrol stn otherwise!

Russ,
I don't know if we can compare ST and RS because of their different systems of indicating low fuel level (light only vs gauge) and (in your case) different sized tank.

From previous posts I understood STs generally read lower than the RS? Maybe not!

Monday morning on the way to work ran out!!! Doh!!! Just did an oil change and general maintenance. Pulled off both left and right faring to rewire signals. All was well after a good ride Sun. Anyway, got out of my routine of setting the trip meter, never got a dummy light. 1st time that ever happened. So, be careful. One hesitation and done...had to pull over to the left side median beginning of rush hour nowhere to go! Luckily freeway service patrol was right there with petrol and off I went. Could have been much worse.
