Difference in Triumph Silencers?

Am in process of buying new Sprint ST '06..Question.. I see Triumph offers several silencers.. one seems to incorporate the three pipes out the back under the seat (and a list of $525) while several others seems ot be the side 'can' variety( in the mid $300's arena)? Any thoughts on

(a) sound and tone differences?
(b) performance related differences?

The side mounted silencers fit the pre-2005 models. The '05-'06 Sprints have underseat systems.
