Coming home from work on Monday my ST started to feel like it was missing a bit. Then a few miles later on its started "kangarooing" like it was randomly missing particularly on acceleration.

Got it home and had a look inside and the first thing I noticed when I removed the spark plug coil/leads (this is a 2004 shim under bucket type) is that No 1 spark plug hole had about an inch of engine oil in it and the "O" ring seal in the hole above was clearly distorted (during manufacture I presume).

The coils all test at 1.2 Ohms and the plugs spark against the head (although I have ordered some NGK CR9EIX Iridiums to replace the original CR9EK plugs - note these are different size and spec to the early shim on bucket models).

Im at a bit of a loss, as the spark plug caps were tightly sealed over the plugs with no oil ingress. I cant really see why this would cause a short ???

Anyone else experinced this ???

Vinney, had something similar on my '03 Sprint. It turned out to be fouled plugs caused by using Shell Optimax fuel - HTH.

Yep - replaced the plugs with NGK Iridiums and all appears to be well again although now waiting for the yellow engine light to go off (I think its supposed to go off after 3 restarts ??).

The last lot of plugs only did 2500m on mainly BP 95 RON !

... 3 full heat and cool cycles; if not, then take it to a dealer who can do the computer wizardry and tell you what's wrong and to go and see your bank manager ;-}

Some fuel reseller chains sell dirty petrol. Talk to your dealer, if you trust them, about where to refill. Also when you wash your bike as far as possible keep water to a min. around the tank and frame; the drain holes around the plugs don't work too well and you get plug thread corrosion.
