Hi All. Well - I do not particularly want to get heated grips on my bike so am looking at options to keep the feeling in my hands this coming winter. I know - I live in San Diego but you'd be surprised: living inland regularly sees temps in the 30s F.

I know there are plenty of insulated winter gloves out there but my questions are:

1- are those silk glove liners effective with summer gloves and
2 - are there any non-black winter gloves??

I like a little colour in my gloves, you see.

Thanks - BB

I recently did a 5 day mid winter trip in temps of about 5-15C (approx 40-60F?) without heated grips.
My gloves are mid weight.I had lightwight polypropylene liners which do make a difference.
If it was wet or early morning I also slipped on some plastic bags over the top.An old guy I somtimes ride with told me about this (sliced bread bags). They also make a difference.
I tried buying nylon overgloves from 3 bike shops without luck - have since tracked them down through a mail order co.
Dry gloves are important.
Next time I will probably get heated grips.
I dont know about the colour question - mine are black

I typically ditch the motorcycle gloves, and use snowmobile gloves for my winter riding. I ride until the temps drop below 20* F, only because the carbs don't like to work when it's any colder than that.

I do have a set of Widder electric gloves, though, that work wonders when I want a thinner glove, yet warmer overall. Snowmobile gloves tend to run on the bulky side.

Don't even think about using silk liners (or any liners, for that matter) with just a summer glove. It won't come anywhere close to being warm enough in the 30s. Might do you well in the 40s and 50s, but drop into the 30s and 20s, and it's a whole different ballgame.

I've got 4 sets of gloves, depending on the morning lows (not the day's projected high!), one for 20s + below (electric), one for 30s (snowmobile), 40s-60s (getting warmer), and then the summer riding gloves.

Hi BlackBeauty,
I don't get to wear these much now but I have a pair of Teknic "Storm" gloves which are both 100% waterproof and have a thermal liner. They also have a wiper blade on the fore finger of each glove. (that is very handy)

I have used these when there has been snow on the side of the road etc in New Zealand. They are a heavy guantlet style (quite well armoured too) and do keep your hands and fingers completely warm in frozen weather.

The downside is they are quite bulky which makes moving your fingers more difficult than regular gloves.
