Hey guys. Is there any inherent reason not to use a hard core Sport Tire on the Sprint? I hate the stock tires (too slippery and follow ridges in the road) so looking for the best grip and handling I can find. Longevity isn't as important to me at this time.
Would a top rated sport tire be a good choice? I'm thinking of going with the new Dunlop Qualifiers. They won best new product and best tire in a couple of the mags. Would these tires be okay for normal around town riding? Any advice appreciated.

They'll be fine......you'll just get less miles out of them but if you ride aggresively that's what I'd do.
I'm gonna go with a stickier sport tire in the front when the stock Bridgestone 20 wears out...not sure about the rear yet.

I just switched out to Avon AV45/46 combo. This is what I'd been running on the FJR for nearly 10K miles with great satisfaction. Definitely changed the handling on the bike. MUCH better. I'd forgoten what it was like to ride on round tires again! As for your question barey, won't hurt a thing. Just make sure the load rating and speed rating are acceptable for the bike.

I thought the profile on the Dunlop might lend itself to good high speed cruising on the freeway etc. It's quite a bit more rounded than some of the others which tend to be more triangulated such as the Michelin Pilot Powers which I was also interested in as well as the new Avon Venoms. Any thoughts on particular profiles on tires as it relates to handling characteristics?

People around here LOVE those. It was my impression that those were biased towards longevity over traction no? Mainly, I just wanted to get the best grip I could find to offset my somewhat less than thrilled experieneces on the Bridgestones. They don't grip well for me at all and I swear they track every little rain groove on the freeways around here.
I'm looking for the most compliant tire I can find that will still have good "straight line" freeway characteristics. Looking for something that can deal with all the "rain grooved" freeways better than the 020's. Felt like the Dunlops might be a good choice but I'm certainly still open minded, otherwise I'd have ordered them already. I'm going to research this until Monday at which time I have to order something. Any and all help greatly appreciated!

I HATE the Avons. They suck in the rain. 020's suck too. Good luck for me has been the Conti Road Attack and the Pirelli Scorpion Sync. Others like the Z6. I ride pretty aggresively in the twisties and the Conti's have given excellent wet and dry grip and last about 6K. I can spin it up out of tight 1st gear corners that's it. I will soon be ordering my 3rd set!

Davem is sure to chime in soon.
He has tried all sorts of tires and has a few postings in the 'tires' sticky thread and some photos in his album.
He tried Dunlop Qualifiers recently and while they were good he only got 3000kms before they were duffed.
I know he rates Avon Azaros highly.

Really? How and where are you riding in the rain, cause I've had very good luck with them.
Barey, I don't know how hard you ride, but the Avons are a dual compound tire. Harder in the middle for longevity, and softer on the sides for grip. I've scraped LOTS of hard parts on the FJR with the Avons and never the slightest wiggle. In fact, I've put a hurtin' on a brand new Avon riding the dragon and the Cherahola in an afternoon. I may someday try a set of Conti's, but for now, why mess with perfection. But, by all means, get what's best for you!

wasn't just me and not once. RT 209 NC me and a guy on a Banbit 1200 we could not up with GS's on TKC 80's. second time My bro following me down the mountain on an F4i 2 up watching my Sprint in 2 wheeled drift. You Like them great I hate em.
I have riden them on the dragon and many tougher roads. They stick like glue when its dry. I have a half worn set if you want them. Every time I take a trip it rains so wet traction is far more important to me than dry. The only 2 tires I have been able to over ride in the dry are the 020 and the Sport MAx
