I was thinking of buying the Haynes manual for my 2003 Sprint ST, but I was worried the book wouldn't be up to date as it covers only up to year 2000.

Is this because that was the year the manual was produced and will it still cover the later models?

Any comments would be appreciated :???:

Hi Mark,

I have just bought an '03 ST and decided to get the Haynes manual, It covers most things, but some are out of date, such as the wiring diagrams which show a light switch (mine is hard wired) so I think it will be of limited use especially as I think the engine has been changed (according to a local mechanic)

So you may be best to wait.

Hi Bozo,
Are you sure that isn't your passing lights switch?

Hi Preachp,

No, the 2000 (and earlier) had a physical switch to turn the lights on to side and full on UK spec models. At some point since then Triumph have blanked off the switch and the lights now come on dipped at all times (I suspect you have had this for some time in the USA?) When I use the passing light switch it puts the full beam on as well as the dipped beam.

Thanks for the advice regrading the manual. I think I will wait for the time being, however I'm now worried about how old my bike actually is. It is registered new in September 2003, but it has a manual switch for the sidelights and the dip/main beam. Does this mean it is a 2000 model that was never registered?

To alleviate the tightening in my chest from thinking I've bought a 4 year old bike for a 1 year old price, is there a way I can check the VIN No for when it came off the production line?

Once again, any help is much appreciated

M..........Motor Number - equates to engine config (#cyls*bore/stroke): A=4*76/55, B=3*76/55, C=4*76/65, D=3*76/65 .... M=3*79/65

G.........Final drive ratio - A=17/52, B=17/50, C=17/48, D=17/46, E=17/44, F=18/45, G=18/43, H=19/43, J=19/42

X........Year of manufacture - L=1990, M=1991, N=1992, P=1993, R=1994, S=1995, T=1996, V=1997, W=1998, X=1999, Y=2000, 01=2001, 02=2002, ....

Hi All,
So can someone explain my VIN to me? I will leave off the last six digits .

SMT600FS83J######

It doesn't fit the above at all.

Mark,

I would not worry! My comments about the light switch were based on a guess as when the changes were made. My December 2003 ST does not have the switch, and to be honest, if I can find a working switch from an earlier model I will fit that as the lights on option does not appeal to me.
I checked my VIN against the link posted from the other site and mine made no sense either!

Ho hum, I'm sure someone will come up with the answer.

Thanks for the advice and reassurance. The pain in my chest is beginning to ease now.

I checked my VIN plate and it is different to the example, but I will persevere and try to find out the build date.

Thanks again

Mark,

The easiest way to tell if your bike is a 2003 spec is to look at the left hand side of the fairing ( sitting on the bike) down at the join between the belly pan and the middle section. The 2002 onwards spec engines had to have a bit of the middle section cut away to allow the alternator to poke through. All Sprint ST's made before 2002 had the earlier spec engine and the alternator is located above the gearbox sprocket cover. There is no cut away in the fairing panel on these models.

As for the light switch, I believe Triumph were still selling their bikes with the swithces for the 2003 model year. From this year onwards in the UK market, the lights are hard wired. Its no problem to buy the older switch and fit it to the 2004 model (which is what I have done as I prefer to decide when I switch my lights on, not the manufacturer of the European Union).
