Cell phone are a great invention. A customer can reach me anywhere. He does not know I am out riding. I was running errand in the city, the phone rings. Normally, I do not answer since I have a full face helmet, I decide to stop on the side of the street because I have a small helmet on and I will be able to answer, what a great idea.

I answer, start talking and get involve in the conversation to the point that I decide that walking around instead of sitting will be much better. I am just beside the bike and I see the bike falling on my side. Drop the phone keep the bike from hitting the ground too hard, those things are hard to stop. Damage to the bike, none, phone is hurting. next time I have to remember to put the side stand or better, never the phone.

so you say to the customer "sorry about that! just caught my hand in the photocopier",OR "hot coffee spilled onto my desk",OR "my computer crashed" (hence the noise LOL) and they're none the wiser.

Glad there was no damage to you or the steed.

While technology rushes forth, I must say to step back and let it go. Leave a message! I`ll call back. I know that there are several reason`s to stay in touch, but there are more reason`s why we ride. A wise old friend once said to me " We ride these things to slow our lives down". My phone is always with me and always on, but I only check it when I stop for "ME". :moon:

Except for the obvious emergency uses, I basically detest cell phones. The situation is only getting worse. I've noticed over half of drivers during the commute have one stuck to their ear. It's almost a given if you notice someone doing something boneheaded or strange in traffic, that closer inspection will reveal a cell phone stuck to their ear.

Also, folks now expect instant gratification if they know you have one. They just don't understand it if you decide to leave it off or have them leave a message.

The worst are people with whom you take the time to stop by personally and see, for business or pleasure, and every person that decides to ring them up takes precedence. I see so many young folks riding around together or out on dates, and either one or both are on cell phones. What gives?? :asb:

The wost part is that I think that the world did exist and business was done, for thousand of years without them. I even asked my partner, what could be so important that someone has to talk to me now and I drop my bike because of one. Silly me.

I feel your pain on dropping the bike, btw. I just let mine go over a few days ago, over being in a hurry and preoccupied with unloading my new DRZ400. Glad to hear your bike escaped basically unhurt. Mine lost a mirror, bent the shifter and clutch lever, and got some minor rash on one panel.

This hobby does not tolerate even a second of lax attention.

In Oz it is illegal to drive and use a mobile phone at the same time. Doesn't always stop them doing it but the cops are really cracking down on it - $ fine and points lost, and rightly so.. IMO

Hands free is still OK (legally) but it still doesn't allow you to fully concentrate on the task at hand - like putting your side stand down!!

Glad that there was no damage.
