I installed the three piece heat shield kit on my '06
Sprint a few days ago. If you folks don't have this mod,
you better git-r-done, it really makes a noticable difference. I think the heat is about the same as my
2000 Sprint at road speeds but still hotter in slow traffic.

I thought the 06's already had the kit installed??

The early '06's did not have the kit.
I've seen three without it.

I recall a post recently where someone rode with the lower fairing removed from their 05/06 ST and noted the bike ran cooler.

So it got me thinking (it does happen once or twice a year), has anyone thought of or tried cutting neat holes in the lower fairings and possibly main fairings and dressing them with mesh or similar to allow more airflow?

Putting the extra foam in there is stopping the heat emerging from one point, but it has to go somewhere.

Just a thought. :

Beach, the foam heat kit redirects the radiator and engine heat out the large holes in the side of the fairing (where the chrome accent piece is) -- no need to cut new ones.

Beach,

Another downside to cutting holes, especially in the chin fairing is it would probably take away some of the cooling air for the radiator and oil cooler. You know, path of least resistance. Now, it would probably help with the perceived heat, but I think at the expense of operating temps. So in town the bike is gonna run hotter. This is info I gleaned from the FJR sites. I'm assuming it would pertain here as well.

Ok now I see it in a different light.

All that makes sense.

I'll be looking for the foam kit at my next service.

Go to 99-04 ST in the sidebar and click on mods

I warrentied the heat shield from my dealer and it may be here by this Friday. It'll be interesting to see/feel the difference.
