I've got a question. Recently I bought a 2000 Sprint RS. I've noticed that there isn't a seal around the fuel filler cap, so water can actually get inside the fuel tank. Granted, the filler cap seals itsself into the lower portion of the neck, but there's a small area that water can get through to the inside of the tank. There's about a 1/8" lip preventing water from going into where the fuel goes, however if the filler cap is opened, it could be extremely easy for water to get into the actual fuel tank.

Is this normal, or should there be some sort of seal around the filler cap (the opening part) that prevents water to get into what I'd call the over-flow area of the fuel tank? I'm pretty concerned that water can get into the tank when I pop it open to refill.

yes, this is a normal condition. But, there is a drain tube in the filler neck area. see those two holes on the lip around the filler hole? One is a tank vent, and the other is the water/fuel overflow drain.
The only problem would be if the hole becomes clogged. then any water would dump into the tank upon opening.

You could run a bead of silicone aound the bottom of the filler rim in order to seal it.

OK. That's good to know there is a drain, at least. It must be clogged, as water sits there for days... I'll check the line today and see what's blocking it. Thanks!
