I'm excited...

Finally going on a trip to visit Deals Gap... I know there are some roads that are just as nice near there... and I'm excited about that too... we're just gonna hit the tail of the dragon so I can run it, buy the tee-shirt, and be able to say "been there, done that"... but really looking forward to touring that whole area of TN & NC...

Trip is scheduled for mid-September...

I just had to share...

You'll have a blast. Try to go during the week if you can. The weekends are just too crowded to really enjoy yourself. Like you said, there are plenty of other roads in the area that are just as good or better than US129 and they don't have near the traffic or LE presence.

I usually try to get out there at least once every couple of months, but I havent had a chance to go since February. However, I'll be there during the third weeks of August, September and October. Gotta make up for lost time!

I'll take the Sprint in October since I'm dropping it off to have a turbo installed, but Aug/Sept will be my first trips there with the K12.

The plan is to hit the TotD early Thursday... then spend the rest of Thursday, all day Friday & Saturday to ride other areas, then return Sunday... I'm going w/ three other guys, one that has been there once or twice a year for about 10 years... I'm just gonna sit back, let them lead, and enjoy the hell out of myself...

Only problem is, when I return I will most likely be so spoiled that the "twisties" in N. Texas will seem anything but....

Take rt 28 from the Deals Gap Resort (corner of 129 and 28) and follow it all the way to the falls. Awesome day trip, with plenty of curves and scenery.

Plus it's a faster road with less cops.

With good reason ... grin! My son and I did it two years ago. The NC section of the BRP is great, too. As is the Cherohala Parkway (a MUST do if you like fast sweepers, but watch the decreasing radii) and the Foothills Parkway (from the northern end of the Dragon) is a nice ride, too. Hell, NC 28 from Bryson City to US 129 was better than most roads in CT ... grin! Have a blast.

I am writing this post from the Two Wheel Inn just outside Robbinsville, NC on 129 about 25 miles from The Dragon. Great place each room has a private garage for your bike. It's under $50 a night too. It has been very hot here all week, it hit 100 about 2PM today. No joy riding in that heat. I'm actually glad we are heading home tomorrow, I'm worn out. There are still plenty of bikers here though as the motel was sold out again tonight.

Vdlcinc, been through there many times and it is a complete hoot. However, having said that please be careful as there are a***** load of fools running around there on motorcycles, in cars, pick-up trucks, and yes semi-trucks. I have seen it with my own eyes, a full sized 18 wheeler taking up both lanes attempting to navigate the Dragon. What a shock it is when you are digging through those great turns and you come face to face with an 18 wheeler in your lane,*****! But, when there is little or no traffic it can’t be beat. Have a great time! :-D

Ya'll should try the area around Big Bend National Park. Several hundred miles of great roads, with minimal traffic. It's almost too hot in the summer, but from fall through spring it can't be beat.

The only drawback is there are even more dirt roads that my sprint doesn't like. Now if I had an old Trophy....
