top speed I have reached so far is 140 mph, I'm hoping to top it out this summer, but I've also done it at 140mph with my wife on the back! Not bad at all

145 then wall for me. I want to change the gearing for a little more torque. May make the motor run harder at higher RPM's but it should pull harder too.

Scott619, I saw a formula bike race few weeks ago on TV and there was this young guy, 23 yrs old I think, that was on the Honda race team for a while and won a few championships, then switched to Yamaha and smoked his rival for yet again another championship. Made history for wining the race with two different bikes. I most definitely think the machine has much to do with it, but when the driver has experience, watch out. My partner is like that. He had a BMW r1100s 2002 and was smoking Ducati riders. What a site, made them cry. He leaned over so far in the turns that the foot peg wear indicators came off. DK the technical term for the item but it is a safety feature that slides up and tells you that your in the turn deep, for a BMW. If you know about that bike, the heads are hanging out so leaning could be bad if you go to far.
I think the Suzuki driver has some training to do.

Marty, you are right on a track or a canyon road, rider skill is probably a good 60% of the equation. But in your post you don't mention turning, sounds like you did a 2 mile drag race in which case the bike was old or he was a wimp. A new 600 can give a Sprint rider the hole shot and the 6 will still run them down.

Marty, the racing you saw was MotoPG. The top riders in the world. The young guy, Valentino Rossi is the reigning world champ. Between Motogp 250, 500 and liter I think he has 5 world championships. He has done them all on hondas till this year.
Last year snide comments were that he couldn't do it if he wasn't on a honda. For whatever reason he switched over to Yam. which is the underdog taking his team with him. They are much down on power vs. the hondas which could be seen at the previous race. Sete G. on the honda would power him down the long straight but Rossi would out brake and out handle him in the curves and would always have the advantage at the line. Sete G. is no slouch either, probably 2nd. in the world.
For anyone to say it's the bike is wrong. You were seeing probably the finest racing between the two top riders in the world.
They don't call Rossi "The Doctor" for nothing. I think he could race a shopping cart and win.

Just how far can we lean the ST over safely at speeds? Please post your comments and own results.

All the way to the edge of the tire, till your knee is dragging, and then some. Till the center stand drags, and starts levering the bike.

Do you reckon that if enough people did encourage him, Rossi would switch from Yamaha (after winning this years championship), and try to win next year in a shopping cart??
Tescos, M&S, K-mart ??
