Shift linkage question

I've seen this description in a few write-ups about the new Sprint;

"a revised six-speed gearbox - with remote gear change linkage"

What exactly are they referring to?

the gear lever isnt attached directly to the gearbox.There is a linkage between the gear lever and gearbox.

I thought that's what they probably meant. Just couldn't figure out why they mentioned it. That's not an uncommon feature on bikes these days.
