Hey i have a 2001 Sprint st and it has only 5000 miles on it. I have been told that when you go to sythetic oil that you should not go back to semi sythetic. I have used motul 5100 in the past but that was on a Honda VFR 750. What are most of you using in your bikes. I am new at this board and i am looking forward to reading all of the good info on this site.. joshua

It does no harm to mix dino oil with synthetic. Many motor oil blends abound out there. Look in your manual and match whatever oil you buy with the oil specification in the manual. Simple as that.
This probably came from mixing synthetic brake fluid (5.0) with a 3 or 4 which is non-synthetic and that is a BIG NO, NO.
But 5.1 is compatible with 3 & 4 as it's non-synthetic.

The other thing to stay away from is any oil that states it has a friction modifier. This is not good for the wet clutch in a motorcycle.

Shot across the bow for an oil thread!!!! :2guns: :flam:

Good grief, we haven't had an oil thread in days. Definitely time for another :hammer:

I'll jump on an oil thread any day, just for fun.

I've used Motul 5100/50 in my S3, but it did use about a litre over 5,000km. If I use Silkolene Comp4 20w/50 I get the same great (no usage over the 5,000km) service as Mobil 1, the manufacurers recommended oil. So it's either of those depending on where I go to get it.

I hear Royal Purple is also good, but expensive and hard to get in Aus.

Mick

I have been using Motul synthetic for years. Nothing has blown up or seized on me yet. :-D

Cheers,

Davem

I am not using any oil between changes and ride quite quick most of the time.

Cheers,

Davem

OK

just to throw some instability on the subject

My first 1600kms was with the run-in oil (mineral I believe)
All the way from there till last service (23,000kms) I used Shell SX4 synthetic fortified
The service guys just put in their fully synthetic stuff for the first time in the bike's life last week

Dunno if that proves a thing either way, but any decent oil conforming to Triumph specs can include semi-sythetics so you don't have to spend a small fortune on exotic stuff
