I love the tank of my new baby so much that I can't bear to put even the luggage locker attachment ring on there............I know, anal retentive minimalism.

So, at least until I get my free hard bags and can make a run into work once a week with clothes and lunches for the whole week, I'm cramming my lunch into the fairing pocket.

BTW - who has jettisoned the tool kit so as to get more storage??

Well, with a Givi V46 trunk, Nelson-Rigg saddlebags, and a very capacious Marsee tank bag, I really don't need to use the fairing pocket for "storage." I do have my accessory wiring, a leatherman, and an air pressure gauge in the pocket.

LOL! :-D I sure could not fit my lunch in there! Heck, I can barely fit my wallet and my Razr cell phone in there along with the tiny tool kit.

Although the tool kit is minimal, I would not want to travel without one. Then again, I'm sure there are many owners who would not know what to do with even a completely stocked Snap-On tool chest, so I guess they might as well free up some needed space!

Hey, if you want to complain about tool kits, check-out what Ducati provides - a phillips/common screwdriver and a 5mm allen wrench! That's it!

I've been wondering what good the toolkit would do a person in any event. If you need tools the odds are pretty good that you're going to need a part or two to go with them.

Has anyone actually used the toolkit on the road for anything?

I tightened my chain in the middle of Arches National Park in Moab, UT.

I was stopped after a hike up to Delicate Arch and a guy was checking out my bike and noticed the chain looked pretty loose. Sure enough, it had stretched and loosend during the first 800 miles, so I used the box end and spanner to tighten it up before It got much worse.

If I get to doing any serious long distance rides I will suppliment the factory tool bag and will replace some with better tools.

I saw a tool kit list on the Iron Butt Association site the other day that was quite extensive, but you'd have to partially fill a saddle bag with it.

When we go rock crawling in our Broncos we take everything but the kitchen sink for some trips (on board air compressors, welders, spare PS pumps & gear boxes, axle shafts, drive shafts, etc.). It ends up being a lot of work fixing all the stuff we brake so I thought I'd get back into a less labor intensive hobby, hence the ST! However, I still feel naked with out a good set of tools and some duct tape and safety wire!

Mines out. If touring would take basics plus other stuff (tape, wire etc) but day trips heck there's no room for anything there apart from wallet, and other small items.

If it does break down, that's what RAC/AA are for.
