Ok I wanna tighten my own chain, i have 3000 miles on the bike and I've had triumph tighten it once back at 1000 miles.

I know i need a torque wrench, but I don't know the size of the socket pictured below:

I used my calipers and got two possible measurements, 11/16 socket or 17mm. My question is, does triumph use all standard or all metric hardware on thier bikes.

Im from the US and we obviously like using standard here, but I used to own a Toyota Supra and all the hardware in it was metric because its import.

So i have a whole metric set if its needed, which im praying Triumph is all metric.

My next ( and last ) question is how much give / play should the chain have? Lets put it in terms of travel distance upward and downward. 1/2" 3/8" more? less? The last thing i want to do is over tighten my chain.

Heres a picture to explain more:

Thank you for your input in advance,

--Kory

On my 2000 ST, that bolt is a 17mm. Every fastener I've encountered so far is metric.

I don't have the owner's manual handy, but on my bike, that chain movement (overall) is in the neighborhood of 1.4 - 1.6" (give or take some).

Thanks Dan!

Anyone know the torque setting for the 17mm bolt?

I'm at work and don't have my 2006 Sprint owner's manual, but I was reading it this very morning and I think I remember that the bolt's torque setting is 55 Nm. You might want to hold off till someone else can confirm this. Also, I think the chain free-play range should be 35-40 mm. I can verify this when I get home tonight if someone else doesn't beat me to it.

Confirmed - 35-40mm play of chain, 55Nm tightness of bolt.

Are you saving the last 2" of the edge of your tyres for a special occasion?

LMAO! You're an ass! JK Funny statement though made me laugh out loud.

I ride up to a local lake in the mountains frequently and as I am not a seasoned rider i take the turns slower.

I am literally afraid to lean too much right now.

Maybe in a while after Im comfortabe on the bike and used to the brakes, clutch and thottle I'll lean more but for right now the last thing I want to do is lay the bike down. I've only owned it for 5 months! ;-)

Kory, different brand tyres inspire different amounts of confidence. I have less than 1/4" chicken strips on my pilot roads. I had over 1/2" on the shinko r005 I had on before. Didn't affect my top speed, or my speed on sweepers, purely how much lean angle I was willling to do in the tight twisties.

So experiment with tyres when you're ready (the tyre sticky thread has some great info) and develop your confidence and feel for the bike as time progresses. No point being a hero who got such a great lean angle everyone can see it on the fairing

Yesterday while riding in the car on the Cherohala Skyway (a well known scenic stretch of twisties up on the top of some overgrown hills called the Appalachian Mountains) we were passed by about six or seven sport bikes. The lead two Ducati's, I'm sure, wore their tires to the bloody edge. About ten minutes later those two were in the ditch with a group trying to extract the one bike out of the muck and the other laying right side down on the right side of the road. One rider seemed OK but the other was just starting to feel the effects of the impact. Half an hour later and 30 miles away we passed the responding ambulance. Those quarter inch "chicken strips" are really "good sense" or reserve strips. I go to this area on two wheels a lot and the notorius Deals Gap which is just a few miles away. EVERY time I go there, that's EVERY time, there is a sport bike getting hauled out of the weeds.
