need step by step advice on how to adjust/lube clutch cable

Hi,
Thanks for previous message about lubricating the cable. I didn't realize they were teflon coated. Even if I don't lube them now, I think the cable is stretching and needs adjustment. The manual doesn't do a good job of explaining or illustrating how to do things. I looked at the clutch last night and I had no problem loosening what looks to be a threaded washer, but after that I'm lost. I don't want to be forceful out of fear I break something. If anyone could post step by step instructions and pics for adjusting and getting the cable out in case I need to lube that would be wonderful.

After you loosen the 'Threaded Washer' (jam nut) turn the smaller knurled screw that it is threaded onto. This is where you make minor adjustments. Screwing the collar out making it longer will tighten up the clutch and reduce the free-play at your lever. Adjust to the factory specifications or your personal taste as long as they are not TIGHTER than the factory recommendation. (I like mine with more freeplay than recommended) Re-tighten the jam nut (threaded washer) and you are done.

If you find that you need more adjustment than the lever adjuster can provide you need to move the cable retention at the top of the clutch housing on the right side of the engine cover. First take out as much of the adjustment as you can at the lever. (screw it into the lever housing as far as it will go, collar nut and threaded washer too) Now do basically the same thing AT THE CLUTCH COVER.

There are two 12mm nuts on either side of the mounting bracket. By loosening these and moving the position where the cable is anchored you will effect the overall length of the cable assembly. Move the attachment away from the end of the cable tightens the clutch and moving it closer to the cable end will put more slack in the cable. Use the lever to check for the correct freeplay just as you did with the lever adjustments.

Usually if you need to adjust the cable at the cover you would be correct to assume the cable has stretched and I would suggest you inspect the cable to be sure there are no frayed (broken) strands causing it to need such adjustment.

Mine frayed at the lever end just about an inch from the end where it just passes into the cable housing just out of sight. Probably rubbing the metal cable end at the first slight bend.

I didn't try to make this sound like you don't know what your doing, but it's hard to explain things to others who may not have the same visualizations that I might have as I write them.

I'll try again tonight to follow the instructions posted. I think, based on what was suggested and sites I found on adjusting clutch lines, that I have the right idea. However, when I tried to turn the smaller knurled screw it didnt' turn and I didn't want to try to force it.
