The left side bag bounced off my new /03 Sprint (I just bought) on a trip through Wisconsin. A guy found it and says he will send it to me, but it has some serious road rash. Anyone here ever drop a factory mounted side bag off the bike in transit ?

there was a thread here not too long ago regarding that problem. seems that a tab in the clamp or on the bag, don't remember which, becomes bent out of whack. i know on my 03 i just tightened the screws that hold the metal claw on the lid.

anyway, check the past posts and you should find that thread.

Yeah, I posted that thread about a month ago??

Here's the thread but as you can see I got zero responses to it...guess no one's had this problem 'cept us?

Clips come loose...

Had a look at my friends 03 Sprint, and saw that his tabs were bent like you describe in your linked thread, while mine look fine.

The only thing we could come up with that we do different is that he uses his clasps to pull the luggage that last few cms onto the rack, while I tap the back of my pannier until it's fully seated home.

I wonder if using the clasp to pull the luggage locking tongue into the slot is stretching the tab. I would be interested to hear if anyone does this.

We have bent his tabs back, and he now taps them down!

In 17k miles my bags have stayed intact. I've even dumped it in parking lot on the left side and while the bag feels a bit loose in the tab slot it stays on fine.

I have noticed that it is very easy to A) get the tab in but not have it on the rail right, or B) have it on the rail but the tab not being in. I've always caught it before heading out.

On the setups where the bag came off, who did the install?

I've found that I needed to tap the rear of the bag to seat the tab into the slot, except for the left bag that now slides in very easy after the drop.

In my trip last year, I made it a point to reach back for the bags periodically to make sure they are there, especially after rough roads and large bumps...

Good luck

I've caught myself riding with them unlocked before, lucky that they didn't fly off. I tap and turn at same time sorry
