Just curious to see what speed you guys cruise at on a decent trip and what RPM you pull doing so. Ie. what engine speed is ok to sit at for prolonged periods.
Cheers all.

Hi Grnnt,
it really depends on where we are, road and weather conditions and how many K we need to cover in a session/day.

Some examples below:
The Pacific Hwy,or the Hume Fwy 100-130.

The Oxley twisties, 45-130 (around 3500-8500RPM in 2nd), the Oxley or Thunderbolts open road 160-190 (6000plus in top) - although my top speed on the Trip computer is now showing 224.3KPH , only about 8000 RPM in top so plenty more to come as the engine beds in - done on a track day off road of course :-D .

Normal "A" Roads is speed limit +10%, back country good quality B roads 140-160 (5000-6000 in top) is most common.

All speeds in KPH.

Any particular reason for the question?

Nup as I'm running mine in I've been sitting on about 120-140km/h (with the usual disclaimers as you mentioned), pulling about 5, 5.5 in top during the few runs I've had and thought it'd be interesting to see how much it'll loosen up as time goes by. Normally on a trip out on back roads I tend to sit on 140-150 so pulling 6 thou seems no worries. I guess I could check the manual but redline is about what? Do you find the power pushes all the way to the limiter or tails off and you change up a bit earlier?

I've really do have a track coming up and haven't decided whether to take the ST or the RS. Mmmm decisions decisions.

Oh, you're still running in, seems strange getting up to 150+ and running in doesn't? :-D

Redline is 10K, I know the power drops off just short of that, somewhere between 9-9500 I think it is. As the power is very linear through the rev range you don't really need to rev to redline to get the most from the engine. Also I can't say I noticed a tail off as I approached 9000 or so, but then in second or third acceleration is so strong you wouldn't notice it unless it was a) lot or b) maybe on a track pushing very hard.

I tend to use 8500-10000 as a range to maintain speed/acceleration between corners in the tight twisties to save an extra gear change and get the engine braking into the next corner.

On hwy running I tend to short shift between 4-6000 and just use the engines prodigous torque.

I've currently got 11,500K on the Sprint and it revs freely and pulls with linear power, you do feel an extra boost around 6000. It feels lovely when that power comes on, the pulling power is incredible. Feels very similar to my ZZR11 or ZX9 in that regards.

I haven't noticed it reving more freely I suppose it will free up around 20000 like other bikes I've had, but considering it revs willingly now it's not something it really needs to perform.

The best thing about the Sprint is definitely the motors performance. the 05/06 has the pops and burbles on deceleration, the increased power and the lovely sounds of the triple under load......mmmm I wanna go for a ride now :-)

Lucky b*stard, I've only got one bike :-) As it's my do everything including commuter, I tend to avoid track days on it. The RS must be pretty light and nimble on the track.

Yep I'm running it in, (that vmax was down hill with a tail wind whoops I couldn't help myself).
The thing I find about the ST is it pulls like a train, almost as much as my Tuono but it's smooth, (for a big lump), compared to the Aprilia so you look down and***** there goes the legal limit, (and then some!).

I've done two track days at Philip Island on the RS and it's a hoot. Blown away down the straight but I'd catch up around the back as it handles sooo sweet. Plus it's the most fun bike to ride on the road hands down, two strokes put a grin on you face every time. But the novelty does wear off, (size, smell, sound) so it's hit and giggle for sure!

I've done eastern Ck on my ZZR1100 as part of the superbike school but not an all out track day. The island must be fantastic!!! :-D

In commuting the way I stay legal is to put the trip computer on instantaneous l/100K and try and keep it around 4.9-5.5 l/100 for cruising. This equates to between 70-90kph indicated, which keeps me legal for most roads. If I open it up, I'm doing between 120-140 without even trying, so this bit of discipline works for me.

The only bad thing about a 2stroke on the road is following one, coz they do stink and make your eyes water - would be fun on the track though. :-D

It just so happens I'm sitting relaxing at a friend's computer having done 920 kms today, Adelaide to Junee.

I've been sitting on a GENUINE 125kph (indicated 134) at 5,000 revs with the occasional 180 blasts.

These motors seem to have no discernable powerband, just a smooth never ending (well, 10,000rpm) rush.

BTW, I run the 18T front sprocket. It used to run about 132 genuine at 5,000 revs before the change.

Fuel has been 17.5 -18 kpl (with bags on) , about 1.5 kpl down on trip last October with standard gearing but I was probably pushing harder on the Michelins this time than on the 020s last year.

Any of you guys get the chance to do this ride don't miss the Adelaide Hills for some great riding followed by a 2 or 3 hour visit to Birdwood National motor museum. This place has loads of great bikes as well as cars.

Glad the ride's gone well for you Stevecro.

Let us know what roads you do back from Junee.

Murramburrah - Boorowa - Wyangla (the Frogmore Rd) is a nice fast run that bypasses Cowra (but watch for hwy patrol on the main hwys near Boorowa).

Thanks Russ,
Back now!
I took Junee to Cootamundra where I turned right to head towards Gundagai before veering left 3 kms later to Jugiong (on the Hume Hwy). From there it's all Hume unfortunately but this is the shortest route to the inner west where I live.... 435kms.

Well, I stuck to 4,000-4,200 today and consumption went up to 20 kpl....but 105-110 kph would eventually bore me rigid.... semi-trailers pushing me on the flats and passing me on downhills.
I like the 18T around town and on windy roads or with my wife on board as was the case in the Adelaide Hills section of the trip but next long ride I'm going to experiment with a 20T, yes 20, front sprocket, upping the gearing 11%.

This would move me up from 126kph at 5,000 to 140kph at the same revs (a motor at peak torque at around 140 kph sounds good for the Hay Plain). If that proves too high a gear then I'll do future trips with the 19T original.
