Has anyone heard anything from Triumph on the subject? I know you guys in the US were expecting quite a wait whilst parts were sourced and shipped. I have had nothing in the post from Triumph either.

For my 03 ST I heard naught from the distributor (for Belgium) on this.
My dealer didn't know a thing either.

Is there an official recall on this??

I've seen several complaints on these on this forum, but other than that - nothing.

It's not listed in the recall section on this site either. However, if it's official, and goes back to the early models I wouldn't mind getting some more robust fittings.

Check out the discussion I started a few weeks ago

Here

It includes as much detail as anyone has right now. I just picked up my new '03 on Wed and the dealer showed me the alert sent to the dealers from Triumph.

It basically said that the recall effects only specific VIN numbers so not ALL '03 Sprints are effected. Triumph will alert owners as soon as they can but no date info was given...only sometime in May which is almost over.

They also gave the normal party line about not contacting Triumph direct and they would let everybody know as soon as they can.

I guess the problem only exhibits itself if somebody is fooling around under the tank for service so waiting a bit shouldn't be a problem; at least for me...

my ST was only 3 months old and had not been touched apart from pre-delivery and 1000km service but it still fractured the fuel pipe connector and dumped a load of fuel on my garage floor. Australian premium unleaded fuel must be strong stuff cos it also damaged the paint on the frame. Triumph Australia paid for transport, repairs and repainting. There is a design fault creating a weak spot .

Wow! Sorry to hear that about the bike. I'm just passing on what Peter at Triumph US told me on the phone. If you read my post I mention that he seemed somewhat defensive about it and made it sound like the only way that a fitting can be damaged is if somebody does something wrong.

It's always interesting to find out the truth. According to Peter, the NHTSB posted the recall on their website before Trumph finished "negotiating" the recall...i.e. somebody told the consumers that we would be effected before the company had a chance to limit their losses! Business is business anywhere you go. Still a great ride though!

Again, according to Triumph US the recall will be only specific VINs and not *ALL*. I guess all you can do is make lots of phone calls!

Most here would agree the Triumph Sprint STs and RSs are damn nice bikes and a lot for the money. So I'm not complaining if I have to spend $90 to replace the fuel fittings for piece of mind if that's what it takes.

Many will disagree with that but looks like to me Triumph has been pretty conscientious about recalls on fuel sending units, chains, clutch cables, centerstands, items that some manufacturers might have just warrantied on a case by case basis. And it's obvious Triumph has done this not from an altruistic motive but doing so mindful of liability issues. But my impression is that Triumph has done a much better than average job of fixing problems on these bikes, using their nickle, so I'm not going to get in a snit about the fuel connects. I'll fix them myself and go on enjoying what I consider a great ride.

having only just bought my first Triumph it's good to hear that Triumph is better than average at doing recalls for the right reason. I don't think I'm putting down Triumph by saying that "business is business" because there are always trade-offs in business. There's also all types of buyers...those who don't have a clue what a wrench is to those who wouldn't let a dealer touch their bike with a 10 foot wrench.

For something that is potentially as dangerous as these fuel fittings (see the post from acollins...it could have been worse) I wouldn't expect that any manufacturer would want that liability. For me, I know what a wrench is but on a new bike like this I would usually bring it to the dealer for everything until the warranty is up. I'm sure it would cost much more than $95 for parts and labor after just spending $10k on a new bike. I would hope the manufacturer fixes it.

I think Triumphs current reputation speakes for itself...that's why I bought it. This is just a case where it seemed that the manufacturer was holding back on classifying this as a problem and the NHTSB kicked up the heat a bit. I'm certain that it will all get worked out. It's a great bike and a great company!
