Has anyone run their bike dry to see how far they can get on either the Reserve light (assuming ST's have a reserve light similar to the RS's)or a full tank?

i was riding along the motroway yesterday & realised the reserve light was on just after I went passed the last petrol station & by the time I got to the end & found a petrol station I was just shy of 350 km, the most I have ever pushed it before filling up.

Unfortunately I forgot to look at how much fuel I put in, so I was wondering if anyone knew how far you could go on Reserve, or a full tank.

Well, it depends greatly on how you ride.

I ride at a fairly sedate pace most of the time. I was riding last night and the reserve light came on at 206 miles (331km). I filled up at 228 miles (367km) and put 4.9 US gallons in the tank. That means I had about 0.2 gallons left...which is too close for comfort in my book. I'm happy with the fuel economy, though.

I normally stop for refills between 150 and 200 miles simply because I'm 6'4" tall and I need to stretch my legs fairly often anyway.

On my RS the fuel light will generally come on between 320 and 330 kms, leaving 3.5 litres in reserve.
I have seen over 80 kms from reserve (when I'd passed the last servo out of Canberra the amber light came on and I had to make it to Goulburn since Collector's servo had closed like, 2 years earlier). I dropped to 90 kph after that discovery to give myself a decent chance....... that particular fill was my all time record with over 440kms for 19 and a bit litres.
It was too close for comfort.

.....but I can always get 400 kms to the tank if I tour at pretty much legal speeds, not too much throttle twisting and without the soft bags hanging off the sides. They seem to knock about 25 kms off the tank range.

I'm about 85 kgs fully kitted out!

I've managed 231miles with 2 up, full hard luggage and tank bag, and with the tent slung under the topbox. The engine died as I got to the forecourt and I managed to get 19.2l into the tank.

This was a run that was 90% motorway @ 75-80mph, and the last section was normal road with some slightly agressive over taking. I think I could have squeezed about 5-9miles more if I had not released frustration in overtaking. That's the best I've ever maanged just shy of 55mpg.

Don't think I have the willpower to do it again. The light came on at 195 miles.

only 312 kms (194 miles) to the amber light on this tankful...so the sprocket change does seem to chew a bit more fuel. That's still 19.5kpl (55.5mpg or 46USmpg) though, so I really can't complain.

We'll see, with my Adelaide jaunt coming up in under two weeks.

Er... I have a friend...
OK it was me! I've run dry twice now on my 03 Sprint ST (don't ask, I like to live "on the edge").
The first time was at 28 miles the second at 29 miles (around 45km). Both from the reserve light coming on.
The first time was a few annoying yards / metres from a fuel station the second involved my better half bringing some fuel from the lawn mower!

Glad to be of service!
