I read awhile back, either here or over at SportTourNet, about an unlucky soul who lost one of their factory hard bags while out on a ride. Just came off and gone, never knew it happened until they got home and never found it
Well, how did this happen?? It was an earlier Sprint, say 2002-2003?, with the locking bag snaps. I now know...
I went out to wipe the old limey down and voila!, my right side snap clip was open!! Locked and open. The bag could have easily slipped off after a few miles of our famously smooth roads up here in Wawa land. I discovered that the snap clip needed to have the little catch bent over a tiny bit. I was very careful, used a piece of wood as a shim to protect the finish on the outside of the snap and used a pair of "water pump" pliers to leverage the tab over about 1/32nd of an inch. Now the snap keeps closed no matter where the bag is sitting on the guides...before i could push the bag forward on the guide and the snap would pop open, even when locked, which is the important phrase here, 'even when locked!'.
Anyone with factory luggage on the first gen Sprints might want to look at this on their locking mechanisms...
