I haven't been riding my bike for the past 4 days because I'm currently unemployed and have been using other methods to get around.

Anyways, I had about 1 gallon or less in the tank and my gas tank CAVED IN, or should i say sucked in?

It literally sucked inward! I'm assuming due to depressurazation, I was so freaked out i thought someone smashed in my gas tank!

But I filled the tank with 2 more gallons and let it fully pressurize and POP! out goes the tank back into its normal form! No damage done!

So '05 ST owners BEWARE! Don't leave your gas tank pressurized if you don't plan on using your bike for a while.

--A very shaken and worried Kory.

P.S.- Im relieved now, just still a bit concerned about my baby.

Shaken, not stirred?
Shouldn't there be some kind of anti-vacuum hole in the gas cap to prevent this?

Very strange. I have done the same with no effects. It would take some serious vacuum to implode the tank...better get it checked out soon!

That is weird. I could maybe understand if you went from Riverside to Denver with only one gallon in the tank. But even then I would still be surprised.

Hope that never happens to mine. Thanks for the warning. : : : :

I woulkd say Dragon Dan is right.

You will have a blocked vent somewhere.

Should be a warranty item.

MCN commented on this same problem when they blasted the new Sprint in their comparison. They said it happened several times to them and that you could hear the vacuum release when you opened the gas cap. They also said that you could see the tank expand as the vacuum released. Weird.

Happened to me once after I removed and replaced the tank. The overflow hose was kinked and when I opened the tank it sucked. After I unkink-ed the hose it hasn't happened again.

John,
Are you saying it sucked air into the tank or the tank crushed like the 05 Sprint???? I've had lots of bikes suck air when you crack the cap to fill them, although I can't remember my Sprint doing it. The pre-05's sure look like some pretty rigid and tough fiberglass and I would think it would crack if enough vacuum were in the tank to crush them.

It is almost certain that you have a kink in the vent hose. If it is not that, then the tip over valve might be horizontal instead of vertical. If it gets installed wrong, the vent won't work. Those are both easy to fix. If the vent itself is plugged, then the hose doesn't matter, but you still need a vent. Without a vent, the bike will eventually have running problems. It was a pretty common problem with TT600s early on, and the fix was to remove the tip over valve. Nobody can recommend doing that, but it did work.
