I just had the Triumph heated grips installed on my 2004 RS, and was surprised to find out that the right grip has external wire that moves (twists) with the throttle grip.

The heating wire is sticking upward from the throttle, forms a little loop, and is cable-tied from the top to the housing of the dual throttle cable. As you twist the throttle towards you, the loop naturally extends (flattens).

It definitely seems unusual and vulnerable to expose the wire this way. I would think that the wire would stress too much by frequent twists of the throttle, and might fail eventually, or it may invite malevolent damage.

The research on the internet revealed 2 different part numbers for RS heated grips:

A9638006 Heated Grips - Fits Sprint ST - Up to VIN # 139193
A9638007 Heated Grips - Fits Sprint ST - VIN # 139194 and later

Based on my VIN, I should have the latter one. The older design (...006) claims to have no external wiring:

I wonder why Triumph changed it.

I wonder if the older design would fit on my bike. The twist (throttle) grip on my bike has two cables, if that matters.

Which kind of heated grips do you have on your bike? Any comments/experiences? Thanks!

I think you need to have a chat with your installer. The right side "handlebar" has a recessed area under the throttle pipe that is specifically there for the movement of the throttle.

There should be no exposed wiring. the wire from the grip should run under the throttle and switch housing, then mingle with the harness up to the relay in the nose or the bike.

Methinks your installer either did it wrong, or broke the wire under the grip, and did a bad fix.

Sorry, but the 2nd gen(>'02) heated grips do have an exposed cable on the throttle side. Different vendor, along with the change from single to double cable, from what I understand. I had heated grips on my 99 that all wiring was hidden. When I got the '02 I noticed the exposed throttle side right away. I never tore into them to see if there was a way to route them differently. Strange yours in up, mine was on the bottom side.

I stand corrected.
