Pull the nose fairing off, there is only one bolt holding the speedo in (I think) and two wire connectors. I don't know if one can reset the speedo, tuneboy will not do it. I don't know if the Triumph tool will or not, I doubt it.
If one looks at my mods album, first page, relay/resistor picture one can see the bottom of the speedo at the top of the picture.

I think it's really unlikely you can change the 27,000 miles to 7,000. Manufacturers have worked to make the speedometers tamper proof so unscrupulous sellers can't mislead the buyer. And it's a factory-sealed unit so it may be impossible to change the rim without pretty much tearing it up.

Good luck.

PaloAlto is probably right. Coincidentally the people best qualified to give you an answer are in his hometown; PaloAlto speedometer 650-323-0243. Many yrs. experience with European speedos. If you talk to them ask if they can make it read a little more realistically!

I assume the old speedo still works but is just dented?

An instrument technician must be able to swap the odometer part of the speedo over.

I assume it is fairly well sealed up - to keep the moisture out - so would need to be someone who knows what they are doing.

There are plenty of people in the UK who advertise services where they can adjust the mileage on digital odometers, so there must be similar services available in the US. It might be worth a look in the phone book.
