I have just written off my 2003 Honda Deauville after only one years use, but 26,000 miles on the clock.
As soon as the insurance is sorted I need to buy a new bike and constantly come back to the ST. She who must be obeyed, wants another Deauville because she likes the comfort. I however would like a bit more power. I have tested the VFR 800i but found it uncomfortable and I did not like the step up in power at 7000 revs. As you can see, I need reliability due to the high milage that I do. So, Give me reasons to buy an ST that the wife will understand.
Bennymeboy.
ps. what sort of milage do you get out of the tyres.

Sat on an FJR at the motorcycle show, very comfy but nearly £10,000, I don't think I will get much more than £4000 from my insurers

How much would a new Sprint ST with panniers be?? I can't see the FJR being much more.
Also be sure if you get quoted a price for the FJR you can get it with or without ABS. Personally I would get without!

First of all you should get a Sprint because in the price range it is the all around best bike on the market. Dependable, comfortable, fast, gorgeous. Mine has 12,000 miles on varied types of trips, mountains, coastal area and inland. One and two up. Cross town and 300 mile runs. Utterly dependable. Only sure thing in my life. I treat her nice, keep her spotless and well serviced. Rarely run her hard. (above 80) Though she will cruise effortlessly at 100 mph for 40 miles at a stectch (done that). Things that should be changed. The lights..they suck, especially as you say in dirty weather. The seat is torture after 50 miles. These are relatively minor changes that can be done for a few hundred quid, dollars or euros...whatever the currency now. Plus she is a Brit...stand by the flag ect. Well there you go and jacks your Uncle.

What is a Deauville? An ST1100, perhaps?

To ST or not to ST, the obvious answer is to ST! This bike is a dream. Lets start with the FJR. The FJR is a great machine, but it is about $2500 more in the states than the ST. They are becoming a dime a dozen in my town, unlike the ST. There is also a little heat issue coming out from between the tank and seat that could be an issue for you unless you like toasted marshmallows. Me, I don't!
My ST can do more than I can throw at it. On the way to work, if I feel sporty, she is right there with me. If I feel like a leisurely cruise, she likes that too. Great ergos for them 500 mile days. The stock seat does bite after ~75 miles, but a good Corbin, or other brand, and you feel the difference.
I have thought about trading my ST for another bike for about 6 months now (I've only had her for a little over a year), but what makes me keep her is the riding and ability of the bike. She is comfy in the city and out on the twisties. The other bike I would consider trading her for would be a Daytona 955, but the misses says not right now............
As for the VFR, I did race one. We both had aftermarket pipes, all else was stock. I easily kept up with him and probably would have started to pull away after 100, but I knocked it off then. Racing is frowned upon on the road we were riding.............
GET AN ST, you will never regret it!!!!!!!!

You want a Sprint because...
a) You want an extra 308ccs of engine goodness.
b) You want a third cylinder.
c) You want a bike that screams "sexy" instead of "practical".
d) You want the whole fairing, not just the top half.
e) You want a bike that was designed by a team, not a committee.
f) You want a bike that can commute around town in exceptional comfort, but leave your Deauville-riding buddies in the dust when you feel like it.
Take your pick for reasons...

I don't know what pricing you have been given, but you can get an FJR for about $10,500 or so. Which is the MSRP of the sprint with bags. As far as the heat, I guess you don't ride in traffic much? Mine throughs out as much if not more heat than the FJR. It down right sucks to ride in traffic over 90 degrees.
As far as lights on the Sprint, I have no complaints after I adjusted them myself, the factory had them way to low. The twin beams on the ST blow away the lights on my BMW and most other bikes on the road.

The Sprint is a "real" sports-tourer or even tour-sporter. Just make your pick depending your inclination.
Msparks does have point related to the heat dissipation. In hot weather (and last summer it was hoooot) below 40 Km/h the needle of the temp will creep up toward the middle, then an audible click is heard and the fan starts to cool the engine. Unfortunately, this goes together with an tornado of hot air coming from the right fairing and boils the ... errrr.... bits....
In summer its a real egg boiler. Now, do note that the FJR has some issues with heat radiation also...
