Nice pmackie perhaps you must have been a boy scout! I don't even carry the tool kit (too much weight) but I typically ride with guys that are far better prepared than me so my hat's off to you guys.

On the East Coast of the US, I'm very seldom really that far from everything, so my cell phone and a crdit card(also my AMA membership has roadside assistance). My saddlebags always have my raingear and a tireplug kit. Anything I actually pack for, I do carry a small socket set that has a nice selection of hex and torx drivers. Along with chainlube, of course.
If I was traveling thru the desert, I'd carry more, i s'pose....

I'm on the east coast too, and that mindset works for much of the area I ride in. Once you get up into most low-population density areas of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine that mobile phone makes for a great wheel chock block and little else.

Myself. For me, the whole point of having a motorcycle is getting away from the clutter, monotony, and tedium of modern life. Something goes wrong? Adventure! You can never plan for everything, so don't plan for anything!

With that said, I feel naked without my phone and wallet.

I started carrying a tire plug kit just a few years ago when I rode from NY to CA. It was last year that I first needed it, picked up what looked like a hollow drill bit on the interstate 5 miles from my house after having ridden a few hundred miles all day that day. I was super close to everything, but I was sure glad I was able to just fix it right there and get home and worry about the rest later.

If I didn't have all of the room on the GT I wouldn't carry everything I do, but I figured I had the space so I may as well, and if I don't end up using it, I'm sure it will come in handy when I ride by one of you guys on the side of the road with a flat and nothing but a .45 ACP and a cell phone to fix it
