Shifting trouble?
Took bike out for a short ride around neighborhood tonight got up to speed in first, about 9k on rpm tried going to second would not go, worked clutch a few times, finally went to second. No prob in higher gears but coming back in to neighborhood down shifted a nd hut second from both sides a few times and it definitely feels stiffer than other gears. The engine was cold and only rode a few miles, the temps dropped to 60 F here today so thinking the winter might be affecting shift til hot. Anything to worry about here or am I being paranoid?

First off, how long since your last oil change, that happens sometimes with old oil...
Next check the clutch adjustment.

The problem is due to a cold engine. Mine does the same thing when it's cold. Fresh oil helps too. But, why that high of revs on a cold engine? Keep her happy by letting her warm up, then see if the issue disappears. Which by is this? The Harley, 'Busa or?

It was on the Spring the Busa got a workout earlier in the day and the Harley last week along with the Tiger.... I changed out the flush synthetic I put in at 500 miles on the Sprint (1500 now)with some Mobil 1 15/50 from Wlamart, the shifting issue seems better now, I suspect it was a combo cold engine, high revs, and Valvoline MC synthetic in the motor. Thanks for the input gents. I do love this bike.

It's great that you like your Harley and your Suzuki, but listing your Sprint (including model year) in your profile would make it easier for us to help you.
Cheers,

I test rode a 2011 Sprint GT that had the same issue. I threw every trick in the book at it trying to shift out of first. Finally shifted into second after 3/4 of a mile and never had another issue.

Don't know that I would shift my 2011 GT from first gear to second at 9,000 RPM....I suspect there might be a fair amount of grinding taking place if I did.......seems to me like I'd be asking for gearbox problems down the road. From second or third perhaps....but not from first....

Why? 1st is used for high speed take offs. Its meant for that. If you can't change gear at these high revs, whats the point?
I'm assuming thats what a rev limiter is for - to stop it being dangerous or harmful to the engine.

MOTOBU. My question is once you rev it that high in first, were else you going to shift it to? Neutral? You can't go to third til you go through 2nd anyway.
Bike has a redline pushing 10,000, running it up there won't hurt it.
Now doing it on a cold motor, that's a different can of worms.
