Sounds like a simple not-yet-broken-in gearbox to me. They take a little bit, but I'm at >8,400 miles now and I can say it definitely shifts better than the day I picked it up.

I'd also check the clutch adjustment as others have suggested. Both the GT I test rode and the one I bought had the clutch adjusted the same way: too much free play, and the friction zone started as soon as the lever came away from the grip. If yours is adjusted like this, it's possible that it's not disengaging the clutch fully.

I'm not worried about the engine and if you can't see the potential harm shifting from first to second @ 9,000 RPM, there's nothing I can say that's going to change your mind.....BUMP!

Upshifting is alright. Try doing the reverse, downshifting to first while doing 60 in second... I know mine really doesn't like that.
