Help: Sprint ST 1050 gas cap bolt sizes/locations?

The '07 Sprint ST 1050 I recently purchased was missing three of the six allen head screws which secures the ring around the gas cap. Sitting on the bike looking forward, the missing screws are at 3 o'clock, 5 o'clock, and 7 o'clock positions.

Dealer says there's two different screw sizes - an M5 x 10mm (2 req'd.) and a longer M5 x 30mm (1 req'd.), but couldn't confirm the exact locations. Not wanting to screw things up, WHICH screws go WHERE? I've searched everywhere and can't find an answer. Thanks for any advice.

I would expect that the 10mm screws probably wouldn't bite in the 30mm hole, and the 30mm would bottom out in the 10mm holes. Have you tried very gently screwing them in by hand?

Cheers,
-Kit

Haven't tried that yet, but will do so tonight. I had assumed all the screws would be the same size, but for some unknow reason, Triumph used two different sizes. If I had a spare Sprint sitting around I'd unscrew them and see for myself. The dealer could have done that, but apparently he didn't want to tamper with his floor models. Understandable. Thanks for your input, Kit.

It's not unusual to have the different sizes. My SV650 was that way too. Some of the screws actually hold the cap assembly to the tank, but not all of them go that far.
I do agree though.. why not just have all of them be the same and all of them fasten down the assembly.

Kit, I followed your suggestion and it worked. When I randomly placed a short screw into the 5 o'clock hole, it dropped in completely and never bit. But when I placed the long screw in, it dropped down and stopped, the head protruding above the ring about 1/4". I then began turning the screw and it bit, allowing me to snug it down completely. The remaining holes accepted the short screws with no problem. I was able to visually verify this by opening the filler cap and looking inside. There's a metal tube at the 5 o'clock position which extends from the ring down to the bottom of the filler recess, apparently serving as a mounting point to anchor the cap assembly directly to the tank. The tank now looks better with all six screws installed. Thanks again for the tip.

We need to hook up for a ride sometime. Got a buddy in Murfreesboro who rides a Sprint RS, and we usually meet up at McDonalds in McMinnville for breakfast, then ride north up 56 and around Center Hill lake, then head south on 96, which I'm sure you've ridden before. Lots of great roads in the Cookeville area.
