Speedo problem again.
So, I realize that the speedo going to 0 is usually a sign of a flaky charging system, but at this point I'm pretty bloody sure I don't have a flaky charging system. What is it when it's not that?
Symptom: Speedo mostly displays 0mph, occasionally displays 1mph, sometimes flashes higher numbers on screen. (Always 0 when not moving.)
I've swapped out a couple of different stators and R/Rs and replaced and/or tested every piece of wire between the stator and the battery. (Batteries, I should say, as I've replaced that, too.)
I've not had the front wheel off for ages, so I suspect the wheel sensor is not the problem. Doesn't mean it's impossible, though, I suppose.
It was previously intermittent, but it happens almost all the time now, regardless of whether I've been running errands two miles apart all day or just pulled it off of the charger.
Well past wit's end here...
Cheers,
-Kit

Kit if it is the speedo sensor which part is worth over $400 AUD I would be doing DEcosse's Suzuki (I think) speedo sender conversion at a fraction of the cost.

For the 955's it needed a reinstall map from the dealer.
Don't ask why but on my 955 it did that I went to dealer they did a map reinstall and it worked fine afterwards.
The 1050's may be the same....

triplestrength it is also caused by a buggered speedo sensor ('04 ST 955).
That is how I know what they cost, although mine was covered by a warranty

Is there a way to test the sender? I'm sick of throwing money I don't have at parts that aren't actually broken...
Cheers,

Speedo prob again
Hi Kit, remove the frontwheel and try to turn the plastic ring in the housing of the sensor. Look at the indicator, does it show speed?
Do the 2 grooves of the ring look sharp and clean?
Pull out the ring and check with a small compass the polarity, 4 north- and 4 southpoles on the outside at one rotation. If it is ok, perhaps is the cable broken? Or the connector?
Success

When I did my first tire change I did not set the sensor in properly and cracked the magnet. It worked for awhile, then quit. I made a an offer to someone on ebay selling a sensor and told him I only cared about the magnet. I got the sensor for $25 and just used the magnet. You might check ebay for a sensor if it turns out to be that, especially if you can make an offer. According to Bike Bandit the part number is the same for at least the 99-04 RS/ST.

Vielen dank, Juergen! I'll be in touch if it tests bad.
Thanks, thap8riot. I just don't understand how the sensor could've been damaged, as it's been several months and thousands of miles since I've touched the front wheel.
Also, here's an additional data point: the speedo registers moving backward just as it always has; it's only moving forward that's glitchy.
Cheers,
-Kit
