I'm going boggle eyed trying to find info on these I've sort of narrowed it down to the Quest 2 or the 2610 Street Pilot so if you can help...
Do either find places using post/zip codes?
Does the 2610 let you put your own POIs in?
Any other info on the actual usage performance of these units?

KH,
I also replied on the other list. I had the same problem deciding as you. The 2610 and the Quest use the same software to set up routing. You can add your own POI's in both. There is probably a limitation as to how many, but I found the built in ones to be pretty good but I think they are dated for things like restaurants and such because they go out of business fast. I like the size of the Quest and I sure like the cost difference, however you can get a referbed 2610 for the same as a new Q2. Again, my problem was whether to trust that hard drive with all the beating a bike gets.

1. Just because the engine is on and the wheels are turning doesn't mean you're "riding".
2. The bike you ride and the farkles you buy have no correlation to how good a rider you are.
3. The ignorant can be enlightened, but the stupid just drive on forever.

The 2610 will not allow you to add poi's to it (and then it does *)), only waypoints can be added and the limit is 1000. The 2720 will allow to add poi's, so will some of the other new models from Garmin.

*) You can add your own poi's if you create a tranparent map, I have done so for speedcameras, but it is not the easiest thing to do, and you will have to upload a full mapset, which takes time.

Hi, any chance you could give details (or even the map) of the speed camera trick please. It is one I have been trying to solve for some time.

I have some information here http://www.c-note.dk/wordpress/index...nt-of-interest, and the scripts I use are here http://www.c-note.dk/viewcv/trunk/?root=flitspaal

The base data is gpx (xml) data, which I convert with a perl script (you will need some extra modules). I still haven't figured out how to create my own icons, but for me this works.

thanx for that.

As for the 2610 or the quest 2. I am very happy with the 2610. I upgraded it to a 1GB card from eBay, and have it on a RAM mount that allows me to see it even when I have the Baglux on.

On the 05 Sprint, when you use the OEM mount you can't see the thing at all with a bag on.

Just to note. The 2610 doesn't have a hard drive, it has a Compact Flash Card. The 2620 I believe has the Hard drive, and I think a connection that is supposed to go to your reverse switch and rev counter to all it to do ready reckoning.

How about the new Tom Tom Rider. Made especially for bikes. About $700 US. Anyone seen or tried one yet?

There is Dutch site (www.gps.nl) who does not have too much positive to say about the TomTom Rider. One thing is that you cannot (currently - don't know if it will change) create routes on a PC.

Another thing is that in Europe you don't get maps for all of Europe (€140), they are sold separately - I don't know how it is in the US.

Eventhough I have the 2610, I'm interested in the 2720 (harddrive or no harddrive), due to the fact the you can update the POI database without updating all the maps.

Also there is another thing, most downloadable routes are for Garmin.....

There is a new Garmin 2730 with XM radio out now......

Hi,
I was also torn between the 2610, 2720 & Tom tom rider.
In the meatime I got a Tom tom rider from my other half for christmas.

So far...it's very easy to use & much easier to see with its bigger screen.

It did come with several different mounting brakets,
though none seemed to really fit on the Sprint,
(even though the tom tom brackets fitted ok on my other bikes), I ended up using a universal nokia handsfree bracket (as a base for the Tom Tom mount) mated on the LH bar bolts on the top yoke!

It only came with the UK Map loaded so I guess I'll end up forking out for the Europe map set on CD or SD card (if the SD has the same map detail).
Tho don't think they cover Eastern Europe (Bulgaria & Romania) yet !

Also waiting for the car mounting kit to be released soon, so I can use it on 4 wheels as well.

Neil.
