I pulled my front forks today to do an oil change and found the top of the fork tube 16.5mm above the upper clamp. I also found inconsistant oil level between the tubes.

Haynes manual recomends 20mm. What measurement is everyone else running from the top of the triple clamp to the top of the tube?

What recomendations are there for oil level's and weight of oil?

Thanks in advance.

My fork tube appears to be the same height above the triple clamp as the width of the clip on bars.(but they aren't really clip ons. about 12mm. It's flush with the top of the tube.

this is an 03 model. :-D

Oil level is 145mm from the top of the tube with the spring out AFAIK

15W oil is supposed to be the preferred (NOT OEM) fill. Check the calculator at Race-tech for the ST.

The 145mm is correct with the springs out and the forks fully collapsed. If you drain them 'completely' (meaning pumping the forks and then hanging them up-side down for at least an hour) then you can just add the 460cc to each fork leg and you will have exactly 145mm from the top of the fork leg to the oil level as listed in the shop manual. But they must be 'completely drained' first.

The pull through from the 'factory' is '0', meaning flush with the top of the handle bar mount and the top of the fork tube with cap installed. The 12mm or around 1/2" is the maximum I would drop the forks with the stock springs. They are pretty soft and if you collapse the forks with the springs removed the fender will almost touch the underside of the fairing with the factory '0' setting. Actually I think 10mm or 3/8" is the maximum that will not allow 'any' contact. But if you bottom out your forks that hard I would worry more about retaining control of the bike before I was worried about damaging my fender a bit. With Race Tech springs I would worry less as you have to compress them might hard to get them to bottom and the previous statement about control would apply even more.

Thanks for the reply's.

I've settled on 125mm of10wt BelRay fork oil. And I've set the top of the fork at 20mm from the top of the triple clamp. I'm still not decided on the preload setting to use, will think that over some more.

Any comments, or predictions on the above settings?

I've run 15wt oil since new and have experienced no bottoming out under very hard braking from bawling the front to stoppies and makes it very compliant over stock.

IMHO dropping the front 20mm from stock is way too much. I would try 5mm first and see how that goes and use 10mm as maximum.

Thanks for the input Don, its actuall only 6mm from stock as the original setting was 14.5mm.
