I've asked three of them and got one response either way and one don't know. The white square looks as though it should have an indicator light in it, but it doesn't.
I got the install manual with my grips when I picked up the bike. The forward position is for getting the grips hot, then you are supposed to flip the switch fully back the other way to maintain the tempurature. According to the manual, the grips are not intended to be run on the fully forward position continuously, FWIW
