Sprint GT Fairing Removal

There was a video around a while ago that showed this but when I went looking for it, I had no joy. I looked at old threads on here, but it wasn't clear to. So I scratched my head a bit, wrestled with the bike and figured it out.



You'll need a hex socket of the right size (sorry, forget what size it is) to undo the fairings. There are no nuts to worry about, just bolts, so you can just unscrew everything without fear.

When removing the bolts, make a note of which ones you take out of each place - there are two types of bolts, that look very similar. The thread is the same, but the length is different.

1. Unscrew the 2 bolts holding the top plastic on either side. Pull/gently bend the plastic away at the end to unhook it, and to reveal the other two bolts underneath it. Remove them all.
   
   
2. 3 bolts on each side of the air dam. Remove them all and the three peices of plastic. This will reveal two more bolts. Remove them.
   
   
3. remove the obvious 3 on each side of the bike.
   
   
4. Remove the 2 on the bottom of the fairings.
   
   
5. Remove the 1 at each side closest to the pegs.

The fairing will basically be hanging now on a pin in the middle top of the fairing. Just lift it gently up and away and it should just come off.

I hope this is useful to someone.

A couple items I noticed on my GT while removing the fairing on the RH side when on the bike:

In addition to the 5 steps above:

I also had to remove a screw on the upper fairing on the inner section (where the storage cubby is) to reveal a screw underneath the fairing when it is lifted a bit.. (the hidden screw is just aft of the lock barrel housing on the top of the side cowl.) The pin holding the fairing on after the fasteners are off is about 5 inches ahead of the weld on the anodized brace. You do NOT have to remove the nut on the L shaped brace you see between the fairing and the brace!

On my bike when I lifted the fairing off, there was two areas of foam material (similar to something for high end electronics packing) that had some sort of adhesive on both the engine side and the cowl side... have to talk to the local shop about what to do with that also when I put it back together. The more I get into this the more the 100 dollar shop rate per hour doesn't sound so silly.

It would help if the instructions for the R&G sliders were better though...

One thing I noticed when removing the fairing on the GT was with the placement of the R/R to the new position on the left/hand side, it sits right on top of the radiator hose and was leaving an imprint marks, so i placed a piece of foam around the hose held in place with a zip tie.

One thing I will add also regarding the fairing removal and fasteners is that there seemed to be two types of screws on mine. There were several (which seemed to be the visible screws in genres like the 3 on the side) that have a flange around the base of the screw, then a second with no flange. Other than that they are pretty similar. The length on my bike's fasteners was pretty close. I didn't measure but in the and they appeared to be very close.

The GT fairing removing is the same as the ST fairing removing.
