what do you think?
About to make a long trip ( over 1800 miles one way)

1 up, but fully loaded bags/ gear.

just looking for opinions, love the way the bike works now with the 18T but don't really get on the highway with it.

going to be almost all interstate for this trip.

the shredded weat side of me says change it back for more MPG.

just curious what others think?

I just changed mine to an 18T, I don't have much time with it yet but @70MPH it was only ~250RPM higher. Not much in the big picture.

I vote staying with the 18T, I'll post my 18T/19T impressions when I get some more miles on mine. I'm not doing my long commute lately so I don't get to ride much.

I just switched back from the 18 tooth to the 19 tooth as twisties are few and far between in my neck of the woods. I thought the 18 tooth was a better option for roads with lots of corners but I didn't like the 300 extra RPM when slabbing. Also, the 18 tooth seemed to require more shifting for my moderate riding style. The 19 tooth was relatively inexpensive to install myself. I'll be switching back to the 18 tooth if the need arises.

yeah its an easy swap, I'll be spending a few months out in Arizonia and riding a lot on weekends.

Shoo I might make the swap and pack the sprocket to change back once I'm there. why not its only a few pounds weight ( I can use tools already there)

500 rpm at cruising speeds, or any speed is nothing to these engines. You mileage shouldn't change that much. I'm getting 50-51 at 80 or so :-D Actually when you think about it, for any throttle change a wider throttle opening is required do to the taller gearing. Think passing.

I wouldn't think of going back to a 19 as I see no good reason to go to the trouble. The only thing I can see is to loose the added thrust as from experience the top end is the same between the two. Only with an 18 you get there quicker.

Just my $.02

well I was hoping someone would convince me to keep it on.
since I'm going such a long distance I plan on keeping the speeds reasonable anyway.

Mine may be the "less powerful" 2001 model but it has plenty enough to get me in trouble.

I think if I could get a little better feel from the throttle it would be perfect, I think I'll just have to replace the throttle and cable ( mine is a little cracked somehow where the threaded adjuster comes out from the housing.
