2003 ST -- Headlight mods

EU legislation introduced for motorbikes in around 2000 Said that if the lights were two separate units that only one of them should be lit for dipped use. That is why later Sprints only had one light lit as standard in Europe.

I had a sprint st were only one headlight worked at a time inside the cockpit on rh side the are two empty relay sockets, simply add two more relays and presto you have two headlights on low beam and the same on high beam no bulb change required, however I now have a 2004 rs and the relays are not there, anyone seen the relays and know if a similar mod will work on the RS

I have an 04 Sprint RS & I have just done this.
Same mod as the ST, except that the spare relay sockets are behind the right hand side panel instead of in the fairing.
Easy mod. Just plug the extra relay in & hey presto - two lights!

I can see the thinking behind this one.

Its because when drivers see two lights coming & the lights are close together, they think its a car far away & not a bike close up.
Good thinking - or bad? Make your own mind up, but i CAN see the logic. . . certainly at night.

The small "parking light" is completely hidden as its nowhere near as bright as the headlights.

That said, i have both mine on head and dipped. . .

My "04 ST had the extra relay from memory and I had both lights on from almost new.

ST with both lights as low beam is legal in countries following the EU rules.

EU legislation 2002/24/EG states that only one dipped light is allowed. However, two dipped lights with a distance between the lighted areas of maximum 200 mm is considered as one dipped light.

It may have been different rules in the UK at the time when Sprint ST was designed.
My 03 ST was delivered with an empty relay socket. I used a standard, inexpensive automotive relay for the mod.

Hi C. I also have an '03. Could you please give me a bit more info about this mod you mention. I have everything apart right now and those LEDs sound like a good idea. - Jim

Mine's an 05, same thing. Both lights come on for high and low beam.

the newer 05- light cluster presents as a single unit so doesn't fall foul of the same rule
