When riding my ST, when I stop at a light or something, I can feel a lot of heat on the back of my legs. Is it my bike, or is this normal. The temperature gauge is normal.

I was actually thinking of posting something similar. Since I bought my bike used, I've always got that *so, why did they *really* sell the bike?" tinge int he back of my mind...

I've been noticing that my right thigh, right above the knee on the inside, has been gettign a bit toasty. i've also been smelling coolant when it gets this way, but have not found any leakage or overheating. Not a big deal, but when my friend, who also owns a ST, said my bike "smelled hot", I started to wonder a little. Coincidentally, we were actually on our way to the Triumph shop and I asked him about it during the service. Bill told me eveyrthing checked out normal, and unless my temp guage starts being erratic or goes into the red, not to worry about it too much.

So, it seems for me, right now, that it's just going to be a quirk of my bike.

When sitting a lot of engine and rad. heat will come out through the bottom vent on the right side. My right shin gets a bit toasty sitting in the Summer.
I think this is normal air flow through the fairing and exiting in a normal fashion.

On the first couple of rides on my new ST last year I also felt the heat and smelled the anti-freeze smell, but the bike never marked it's spot in the garage... I took the sides of the fairing off and found a very small leak at the hose connection to the upper radiator. It dripped down the side of the motor then onto the exhaust pipes and burned away, which explains why no puddles under the bike. It was a really small leak, maybe a drop in a couple of minutes while hot and idling on a warm day.... Two turns of the screw and all is well...but the heat is still there, which is nice on those chilly evening rides through the New England hills....

I had an 02 ST and it was a bit of a cooker when I first got the bike. But after the dealer updated the mapping the bike was a lot cooler on the knees. It never ran hot on the Gage with the original mapping but there was a lot more heat coming off the engine. So if you have never had your ECM updated you might want to try that.

I get the hots around the legs as well when you come to a stop. I didnt think anything of it as everything else seems normal. I guess it is that bike is realy made for moving not standing.

I believe all bikes are made for moving, not sitting still!

As for the noticeable heat on the right side of the ST, it could also be attributed to the exhaust running down the right side of the frame and out the back. :???:

Yup, same thing here although I haven't found the heat that bothersome.
I did see where a guy took a Dremel tool and made the forward vents bigger to dissipate more heat.
You can see that on "The Unofficial Sprint ST Website" under mods.

Yes, last summer it really cooked on the right side...

It is the engine and the exhaust which runs on the right side. If you take your fairing off you will see that the right side hast actually a heat shield to protect the fairing.

When standing in front off the red light I dreaded to see the temp gauge rising bit by bit, until... ***CLICK*** ventilator starts and a gust of bleeding hot air came rushing up my right leg. On those moments it is a real egg-cooker :-D
