Hi.. Im new here so hello to all. I have a 01 ST and love this bike.. grew up on Brit bikes and my loyalty continues. So far Ive had no problems with my bike however a quirk has surfaced recently. When Im in neutral the bike idles around 2grand.. In gear it drops to 12- to 15 depending on if the engine is warmed up or not. If I slowly engage the shifter and just before it drops into gear the neutral light goes out the idle changes even thought its not realy in gear yet. As soon as I let up and the light returns it idles back up. Ive adjusted my clutch and very cofident its not draging and my oil is level is fine. this seems to be more of a ECM command based on the neutral light changing in sync with the idle change. any tips from here????

thanks for any and all help!!

Carl

Sorry. I wish I could help you, but I'm thinking the same thing you are. Based on the info you gave, it sounds like an ecm thing, but I don't get the tie in. There must be some kind of quirky connection. Have you asked your dealer what he thinks?

THanks for the reply Paul.. Yea Ive ran it by him and he shruged his shoulders. He mentioned stuff like vaccum leaks and sticky cables but Ive checked all of that. Besides wouldnt account for the change when the Neutral light goes out. Ive just done a search (learning the site now) and seams there are a few posts like mine and they describe the same sort of things. Some say its the "steper motor" and others say having the TBs synched helped.. well I guess I will have to approach this scientific like and eleminate one thing at a time. But when Im ridding I have no problems so I guess I will stop letting it idle in Neutral and ride it like I stole it!!.. thanks again for replying and if anyone else has something to add to aid my search please by all means contact me!! thanks.. Carl

My '01 behaves the same way. Engine idle's near 2k when cold, 1700 hot, drops to 1200 to 1000 when gear shifter is engaged.

From discussions with trained Triumph mechanics this is normal operation for the '01 model. I will not vouch for their accuracy so dont slam the messenger.

I believe what is happening is that during neutral gear selection a signal is sent to the IAC valve to go to a full open position, when a gear indication signal is recieved, the IAC then moves to the closed position in anticipation of increased throttle. I havent tested this theory, but will look into it this winter.

Good luck, if you find something out please let us know.

Mine went into the dealers to have the TB synched plus a re-shim of the valves came back with a 1500 idle speed (or more sometimes) although it went in with less than 1000 at tickover before, it used to stall coming down the gears so I suppose this is better?? Put it in last week for a new coil (see other thread) and asked them to drop the tickover a tad, they forgot!!!!
Cant get to the dealers for a few weeks so at the lights every one on a 125 thinks i'm up for it. So embarrasing.
