I think you could be right. I believe the size of the direct drive is bigger after 99 ish. So the drive end of the alternator will not fix the hole. My non Triumph mechanic did tell me of people boring out the opening to make um fit. Sounds dodgy! Plus to do this the engines got to be out the bike. WHAT! I only no this because I had a few problems with the alternator on my 99 Speed Triple a few months back. Triumph quoted me something like £500 for a new one. So with the help of Google I did some homework (knowledge is power) to see why something so simple should be so expensive. Anyway long story short, had it looked at by a chap that reconditions alternators and a day later I was back on the road for £30. My advice would be to either buy a reconditioned one or have yours reconditioned. Its 1/4 the price.
