I have 6,000 miles on a 05 ST and noticed the other day what I'll describe as a clicking when moving without the clutch engaged. To repro… in pretty much any gear moving above 20mph if I pull the clutch in there is a noticeable clicking, especially felt in the foot pegs. It seems to disappear under load but my feeling is that it’s still occurring just not noticeable. I've adjusted the chain and had wheel balance checked with no change.

I'm wondering if this is something others are experience and is normal or something more indicative of a larger problem, possibly with the gear box.

If a few of you 05 owners could check to see if you’re experiencing the same thing and report back it sure would put my mind to rest one way or the other.

Thanks,

I have only 2000 kms on my New ST and have not noticed it. You have probably checked these out but anyhoo...

Rear suspension sagging too much, needs dialling up. Standard spring is pretty light weight, (I replaced mine) thus when under load the back ends sags, causing the chain to overtighten, thus clicking starts as sprockets are too loaded. A sign of this is a hot chain after a ride and also the chain stretching way too fast.

If it wasn't a single sided swingarm (sweet) I would say the chain is not running straight. Try and score a laser pointer, remove the chain gaurd and have a look to see if it is running true.
Lastly, replace the sprockets and chain.
Good luck.

I suggest you test the noise out with the bike on the main stand. You may be able to pinpoint the noise easier.
Its likely to be the chain particularly if you use chain wax so a propper clean up with kerosene may be the answer.
Check for any pinching of the chain too as tight spots make this sort of noise.
Double check the chain adjustment as it may be slapping on your swingarm.
While your cleaning take the front sprocket cover off and de gunk inside there too.

My 01 does something similar and I have looked at and tried almost everything and it still does it. Even changed the chain.

My '01 does the same, I suspect a slightly off center chain, but Im not experiencing excessive side wearing on any sprockets so Im not to worried about it. This winter Ill take the time to do a proper diagnosis and fix.

If you figure it out, please let us know. Good luck.
