What is it, 15W-40 or 10W-40? It looks like it makes no difference in the long run as long as there are no friction modifiers in it and the levels of Zinc / Phosphorus are there. Anyone know what percentage is acceptable to meet the JASO MA specification? The following is a quote from the Mobil Oil Web Site.

Okay. Let's start with Mobil 1 MX4T. What does it offer that Mobil 1 for cars doesn't?
Mobil 1 MX4T is designed for sport bikes. Most of these bikes have multi-cylinder/multi-valve engines and use a common sump, which means the engine oil lubricates the engine, transmission and wet clutch. So unlike Mobil 1 for cars, Mobil 1 MX4T has no friction modifiers, which could lead to clutch slippage.

The motorcycle oil also has more phosphorus/zinc for enhanced wear protection at high engine speeds and high loads. Remember, most bikes don’t have catalytic converters, so higher levels of phosphorus are not a problem.

In addition, Mobil 1 MX4T uses different dispersant/detergent technology for better high-temperature performance and engine cleanliness. Mobil 1 MX4T is also offered in a different viscosity grade than Mobil 1 for passenger cars.

Deller, check "Yes, an oil thread" which had a last post of 3/5/04.

Triumph's response was that their branded oil, Mt4 Racing synthetic is 15w-50.

Hi Deller,
IT is 15/50 and it is proprietary! That means you can only get it from Triumph dealers. I had a local auto parts place call their mobil distributer on speaker phone and all they had to say was "Can we get 4T 15/50?" She immediatly responded "No that is proprietary to Triumph dealers only." So if you develope an oil leak and you use their $50 a gallon oil you only two choices.
1) Drain all the oil in your bike and replce it with something you actually have a half a chance of finding OR
2) Mix different oils.
This REALLY erks me as all it takes is for a sharp rock or other object to bump the oil filter and your out $70 and you haven't even damaged your bike!
:???:

Preachp, here is an oil that meets the specification!

Shell Advance Ultra 4

• Shell Advance Ultra 4 is a unique fully synthetic lubricant exclusively designed to provide the ultimate in engine protection, cleanliness and superior clutch and gearbox operation for high-powered performance motorbikes

• It is the best Shell 4-stroke motorcycle available

• It is the perfect choice for riders who demand top performance and push their bikes to the limit and also for urban and city bikers who rely on their machines day-to-day, as it protects against the extra engine stresses caused by today’s stop-start traffic environments, keeping engines cleaner for longer

• The balanced friction technology used provides quick engine response without clutch slippage for smooth gear shifts and easy starting

• The best engine oil for modern, high performance bikes used in racing or high speed, long distance riding

• The technology has been proven in race and endorsed by leading motorcycle manufacturers, Ducati and KTM, and has successfully been used in motor sport (WSBK, World Super Sport Championship, World 4T Enduro and Moto Cross Championship)

• It exceeds the requirements of international specification (API - SL and JASO MA) and all Japanese and European motorcycle manufacturers.

Check out the AMSOIL.com website for motorcycle oils. I am a dealer and use 10-40 in my '02 ST and '00 Daytona. Yes there are different properties between car and bike oils And Europe is far advanced in lubricants over the US in thier specifications but some manufacturers can meet thier standards. Amsoil is the oldest US Synthetic oil manufacturer with SAE aproval since 1972. They have 10-40 and 20-50 oils for street use.

Come on guy's how listens to propaganda, this is the co. that disco's10W 40for cars & only makes 10W 40 for bikes at @ 320% increase in price."red cap" M1 15W 50 Which is NOT an Energy Conserving oil. It contains @70ppm of moly(friction mod) @2990ppm of Zinc & Calcium(EP & Detergent additives) That's on par with HDDieselOil(now thats a dirty & hard running engine) About M/C's running high RPM's DOHC's,Mult. valves /cyl.-- has anyone looked underneath there hood lately. My Owners Man. said nothing about JASCO MA. I am running "red cap" 15W 50 super syn for Cars with NO clutch slippage. :hammer: :-g

My '04 manual does mention JASO MA so while it's in warranty I'll be going by that spec...just in case. After that it's probably gonna be Shell Rotella T full synth (5w-40).

A users manual for an 00 ST may not have the JASO standard. I got an 00 manual by mistake for my ST and it was all EU specs. My 02 and 04 both have it in the users manual and the service manual. In real world tems the only thing it does provide is a standard that takes out those friction modifiers. If you are really serious about this oil crap, get the Oil Bible and read it. Not only does it take most of the he said, she said out of the discusion it provides data on most oils that you would consider using and allows you to compare them. If you do your homework, I think you will come to the conclusion that I did, the red cap, MX4 and 4T racing have only one practical difference - PRICE.
