On my trip to Crater Lake Oregon, I had an issue.

I was riding around the rim of the lake and the bike felt like it was running out of gas. I gave it some throttle and it went but something was dragging. So i stopped and found this rear brake red hot!!

So I pressed the rear brake and the brake line burst and brake fluid got every where. so after I let it cool down and called for help.... I went to the local triumph dealer in Oregon, which was 100+ miles back tracking on my trip with no rear brake.

They replaced the brake line but said it was not warrantied due to rocks found jamming the brake lever down causing the rear brake to heat up and then the brake line failed. (In Yreka California, I went over a pass on Route 3 and it was in the process of being chip sealed. The***** got every where, but I though I cleaned it all up... guess not.) Called my local dealer and he said the brake line failure should be under warranty. But the local dealer (talked to the owner) would not go for it and I had to buy "his" custom line since he had no triumph ones in stock.

Going to be calling my dealer again today. I will keep all of you updated.

But for now watch for rocks getting in the area above the brake lever, looks like its easy to Jam little pieces of rock in there.

I don't use it that much either, but when riding 2-up it helps the wife not to slide foward too much when coming to a stop. That is when I use it the most.

Man, that's crazy. At least it didn't burst all over your rear tire while you were on it. Good luck.

I kinda went all over the place:

After I got a new line I took it to the car wash and had to clean the brake fluid off the whole rear end of the bike. I did get a little loose a few times, I assume that was brake fliud coming off the shock or some other place the tire flung that gunk up to.

It made a friggin' mess out of your rear tire. I forget how slick such fluids can be. Good thing you are ok.

Better clean that mess up ASAP. Brake fluid is highly corrosive.

Hi, Viper I had a similiar thing happen on my new 04 sprint late last year. I had stopped on the side of the road up in the hills with a pillion. When I took off the bike felt sluggy like something was dragging. I stopped after about 1 km and found the disc glowing red with brake fluid oozing and bubbling out of the caliper.
I took it back to the dealer, the mechanic thought it was a piece of swarth in the brake line that had blocked a valve in the caliper and locked the brake on. He reckoned he had seen it twice before in England,
Triumph replaced the disc, caliper, and brake line under warranty.
Might be worth talking to your mechanic ?
