Shift lever

So, I was just poking around over in classifieds and it looks like the Speed Triple folks have been using Yamaha YZ80 dirtbike shifters for a while now. Has anybody tried with a Sprint? Looks a lot like the Daytona shifter, no linkage. Here's a pretty aftermarket one that goes for less than half the cost of the Daytona version:

$32 holy crap that is cheap. I paid nearly $100 for my shift lever when I made the switch.

I would think that if it fits the S3 it should fit the sprint. IIRC the shift lever is year specific. In other words if you have a first gen Sprint than you'd need to use the early Daytona/S3 lever. The one you linked Kit looks to be similar to the later years lever.

I know from experience though that you can put the later years onto the early years by using some heat (Oxy/Acetylene torch till it glows red) and persuading the lever into the right shape.

Yeah, this one is supposed to fit G2 955s and 1050s. If I had a job I would've just bought one already to play with!

ta3one,

It's not for your bike but should fit. Some of the S3 folks complain about shifting problems and use this solution to replace the linkage to improve the shift. It's a neat and simple solution. The only disadvantage(s) I can see are:

  • positioning will not be as precise because you can only adjust lever position in steps by moving the lever on the splined gearchange shaft.
  • the lever pivot is a long way from your foot pivot so the lever will tend to rub across the top of your boot. Most riders won't notice but it may bother some.
Here's a pic posted by tekmoe in the Speed Triple forum. He used a MSR shift lever - $28 from Bob's Cycle. When fitted like this the standard street shift pattern is maintained.

When I changed over I loved the solid feel I had. I used to have an issue missing gears or hitting N when going from 1st to 2nd but that went away when I switched to the solid lever.

It took some fiddling to get it right for my foot to fit but it was worth it.

Like Champ said the pivot point is farther away from stock so you will notice a bit more rub on the top of your boot but it was marginal at best and hardly noticeable. I say do it and if you don't like it, it's only a $30 experiment.

As a side note I just hit 1000 posts WOOHOO!!!!:Chopper:HappyRoll:party:Happy:Dance02 :welldone

Gratuitous use of smileys are in order!

I just installed one of these on my '03 Sprint, easy to do. Took about 10 minutes total. The shift action is much improved, but the shifter is still a little too close to my foot. Does anyone know of a similar shifter that is maybe 1" shorter?

It doesnt look like an easy fix to shorten this one.

Did I not follow up on this? Ditto what Caddydaddy said. It was actually okay with my old Setup Summer boots, but not with my waterproof Sidis or my everyday steel toe work shoes.

Would some one with a sunline shifter take a measurement for me. I'd like to know the distance between the shifter knob and the foot peg as well as the length of the shifter its self from spline tip to foot peg tip.

I just installed a MSR shifter and as with everyone else it is too close to the foot peg when i ride in my work boots. It's OK with my normal riding shoes on just not my steel toes.

Thanks

A little update on my MSR shifter. I removed the section where the MSR(About 1/2") logo is and welded it back together. It is MUCH better now and i have been riding with it that way for over a month now. I would suggest anyone who want to use the MSR aluminum shifter to have it cut down. You'll be more than pleased with the outcome.

Resurrecting this thread... does anyone with either of these shifters use the MFW pegs? I have the 30mm drop arms on mine with them set one notch backwards to straight down. I'm thinking this might fix the toe to lever distance issue. I don't like the way the stock shifter feels as it just feels like something wanting to break if that makes sense. I get no feel at all when down shifting and a clunky response from the trans when up shifting. Sometimes downshifting feels like the arm is reluctant to return to "home" position.

If you're willing to move your adjustable pegs further back, I would think it would be very easy to compensate for the dirt bike shifter. Not sure how that would affect your other foot and braking, though.

Went to Amazon and found the Sunline Alloy ones, seems there is quite a few to choose from but the question to ask is which ones fit the spline shaft on the 01 ST? I haven't counted the splines nor measured the diameter of the shaft but it seems these aftermarkets ones don't list that spec anyway. Unless someone knows which will and which won't fit I guess you would have to contact the factory as distributors are nothing more than catalog salesman that can only read to you what you can read for yourself from my experience.

I know I'm diggin up a seriously old thread, but thought I'd give it a go. I have a 2011 Sprint GT, and after lowering the footpegs 30mm, the shifter is unable to be far enough away from my foot to be comfortable. The height adjustment required for the 30mm peg lowering has forced my shifter far too close to my foot. Would this MSR/Sunline option provide any additional length vs the OEM GT shifter? Alternatively, does anyone know of an adjustbale one that will work with the GT?

The linkage is much better than the lever only option unless you have tiny feet or you're willing to weld.
