Checking availability on the new ST, (wow-the red is SHARP), I see that shaft drive is now an option! Check it out!

If the sprint were shaft drive, I would have never bought it.

Another vote for the simplicity and dependability of a chain!

I think shaft drives are just fine, and depending on how they are engineered they are only slightly less efficient than chain. The new K1200S shaft only looses 14% power to the rear wheel while chains loose 10%. Its not a deal breaker either way for my if I like the bike. I got an 1100S and its been fine, in fact its nice not to have to deal with the chain. That being said a pro oiler makes dealing with a chain nice and easy too.

Chain or shaft, if the bike is good I'll buy it.

I agree shaft or chain as long as the bike is good. Can't see Triumph going the shaft route unless they come up with a new big tourer, which would be nice!

My BMW R1150R has a shaft and it's only noticeable below 10 mph. Other than that, I certainly don't notice it when riding and prefer it for the minor maintenance it requires. Unfortunately, my Sprint ST has a chain. It was one of the things that I considered a "negative" when doing research for a new ride. The good news though is that the Triumph chain is easy to lube and adjust and the bike comes standard with a centerstand. It's unobtrusive in driving. So, while I'll put up with the added maintenance of the chain, it's the core goodness of the motorcycle that makes it worthwhile.
