hey all,

me and my dad both think it is kind of funny how people will walk away from their car, turn and point the car remote at it and wait fo r the horn to honk indicating that the car has just performed some function. then i started to think, 'cause i'm a smart a**, wouldn't it be cool if i could do that on my scooter too. so i want to mount an auto start to it. figure i might as well make the remote start and panic function work correctly, as well as any security features. but then there's those door and trunk features; so i think i can make the horn honk or the lights flash or whatever.

does anyone have any suggestions as to a good, not too expensive starter system? thinking not to much more than $120ish, since this is only for my own, personal amusement.

thanx,

rash

Remote start on a bike is a bad, bad thing imo. You'd have to disable the clutch sensor, since it has to be held to start. As a result, the bike would then start in any gear. You'd then have to leave it parked in neutral (not a good idea unless you're perfectly level), or start it in gear (not a good idea unless you don't like your plastics or mirrors).

i thought that i could use a window roll up relay to run the clutch sensor as it is just a switch on the lever. hold down a window roll-up function, hit start.

my bike will not start with it in gear, so i needn't worry about that. i don't ever leave it in gear anyway. finding a flat spot in north dakota is surprisingly easy.

Why you would want this is beyond me, but hey, I have a cool alarm when activated goes beep and the indicators flash.

Ever thought of starting your bike remotely and some "admirer" jumps on it and takes-off?

Whatever... so you need send/receiving unit which triggers the following.
<UL>
<LI> A Relay to "imitate" the clutch lever switch.
<LI> A Relay witch activates the electrical circuits (replaces the key)
<LI> And another relay to trip the starter engine. (watch amps on this one)
You need to build in some logic. i.e.:
<UL>
<LI> first the first 2 relays need to be triggered before you can start the bike. Easiest would be to work with a remote that has 2 buttons (2 functions). You could use the first button to arm the bike  . And then the second function (button) to actuate the starter.
<LI> The "lever"-relay, need to disengage when engine is turning, need to build a sensor for that which triggers the disengagement of the "lever" relay: some kind of logical NOR circuit.
<LI> the "key" relay circuit needs to hold the contact closed once the "arm" button is pressed one time (maybe confirmation "honk" that the bike is armed).
<LI> the "starter"-relay should not hold the contact when the button is not pressed (I.e. starting will stop if button is released)
You also need to think about safety, you are actually by-passing the key function.
Frequencies can be scanned and pattern imitated.
Also, what if you get on the bike, how revert to normal operation.... need to think about that to.

All in all a whole operation... have fun

E'bay has all sorts of these type of alarm remote start things.... a waste of money IMO but each to their own.

Interesting topic guys, why not have an extra facility that is disabled if the right alarm code is given...

so if some theiving scumbag jumps & the wrong code is given.....
the HT coil output is fed to the handlebars and front seat area and footpegs.....

well, i am thinking that if i hook it up like it is in a car, should anyone jump on it thinking to ride away they won't get to far. most remote starters shut off as soon as you hit the brakes, which i tend to hold when i get on, so i assume most others would (i know, bad logic).

a clutch switch emulator can be made by simply tapping the lines to the neutral indicator lamp with a relay. when the bike powers on and the lamp illuminates when it is in neutral, then the relay closes to emulate the lever being pulled. no light, no emulate, no start.

activating the electronics and the starter are what these were meant to do, so they have provisions for that already. amp draw shouldn't be an issue if the unit can start a v8. our bikes don't draw that much, do they?

anyway, i am guessing then that any starter/alarm combo or starter should work then. i just need to think about how to make it work when i get the unit in front of me.

well, thanks for the replies all. they made me think of some of the issues and probs i may run into.

also, as most customizing is, this is only for ME. no other reason than i think it would be cool. you must understand, i am easily amused :-D

thanks again,

rash

Hey ST,

I agree with you for bikes.

But when it's -30C, a foot of snow on the ground and your car outside, you're going to love remote start. It's a beautiful thing.

Also, it's the device that allows me to keep little things like my wife's car out of my workshop/garage during the long cold winter!

Now I can enjoy my hobbies!

I for one would love to see this thing work for you. Let us know when it is installed and working. I kinda like your whole attitude. As you said, it really is all about making you happy. Go for it!
