I just bought a used 01 ST on the advice of a friend, and I can already say I am thrilled by the handling and ability to ride longer distances!!. I have a 05 Thruuxton up for sale because I cannot go more then 20 miles before my bad hip aches me so bad I almost fall over when I stop and put my foot down....anyways

The bike I bought was not well maintained, I just changed the oil and I could feel grit as I poured the old into the jugs for recycle. When I added the new oil, the sight glass was a dark brown/black, almost as black as the chain. The chain was so horribly dry and caked that chunks of black sheit poured out of the plastic sprocket cover when I used an emulsifying chain cleaner. I will let the new oil flow for a few hundred miles and change it again I think.

My question is that I am getting a "chugging" when let out the clutch at idle speed that is there maybe 30% of the time? Occassionally the bike will stall from a start and I was told to go and have the injection mapping renewed. Does this sound accurate and should I be worried I bought a dead or dying horse?

I love this site as it helped the mechanically challenged in me. I am planning on getting some new tires and changing the coolent as well. I read the recent threads on Metzler Z6's.

If anyone is interested in the Thruxton, she is sweet and is loaded with accessories for the price of a new stock bike.

Thanks E

E,
How many miles on the bike? Not that it really matters if it was mistreated. The first thing I would do is add some fuel injector cleaner to the tank. If that doesn't clear it up check the throttle bodies to see if they rise and fall together. Check the air cleaner, if it has a 19 tooth front sprocket change it to an 18 tooth. That makes starts much smoother. It probably would be a good idea to have your local shop hook it up to the diagnostic tool and load the latest tune and reset any faults anyway.
There are some members here that have over 100k miles on their bikes but, I bet they have been taken care of. Good luck.

Thanks, I haven't yet done the air filter, that'll be on my list today. The bike has 7500 miles on it. I will look at the sprocket. Thanks E

WOW! No coolent in the expansion tank....dry as a bone, I think I see a squirrel in there. Tire pressure 30psi in both. Injection cleaner in, hope that helps. E

Geez, Come over and we will take a look at it.

Sounds like you might need a updated tune flashed, they can do it over a Mikes in 10 minutes.

Maybe we can switch bikes and I can see if it is really as bad as you think.

Don't worry...I NEVER give bad advice...you will be fine!!

Hahaha Steve, No so far you have not. I am thrilled. Today I dialed in the suspension to the correct settings and Kelly and I went for a ride down to church. Man the thing is like night and day compared to the Thruxton, no package numbness and my hip has given me no trouble. It is running better since the oil sludge has been filtered out and the coolent topped off. I am off to get an air filter. Hope you liked the movie. See you soon E

Good call, can anyone recommend a place to get a service manual? I am not mechanical nd directions are best used before breakage. E

Thanks to my good bud Steve my plugs and air filter have been changed. This has helped immensely and now I know what Paul M was saying about water rusting the plugs. New bar risers to address my short arms and trunk have made riding my ST as good as sex--almost..... I am so not mechanically savvy and Steve ROCKS! In return for such a valued education he got a new beer cooler-fully stocked of course. The throttle cable was quite loose and tightening it improved performance immensely. Thanks again Steve. New tires on Monday and I am ready for a long ride. Keep the rubber side down. E
