On my 03 sprint, the throttle has always felt a little snatchy right off idle. It seemed that there was too much free play in the throttle cables, but when i tightened (at the grip end of the cable), it raised the idle speed, which is NOT good). Seems like whenever coming out of a turn, especially at low speed...I have to be overly careful gassing it, otherwise it lurches forward when the engine starts to accelerate.

Anyone have similar troubles or better yet...know a cure?
Thanks :hammer:

It may be that your cables aren't adjusted properly. They usually are a bit on the loose side from the factory. I assume that you are adjusting them on the cables down toward the head stock?

Though I haven't had to I also think there is another adjustment at the throttle body.

Another possibility is that it has a fueling glitch there, off idle. A little lean off idle transition. I had that and my dealer modified the fuel pressure regulator to give about 60psi instead of the stock 40psi. That cleared everything up.

I get these symptoms on my 03ST when the throttle slack goes outside it's limits.

To correct it, make a mark on the grip (best place is on the throttle grip's upper moulding-line nearest the cables, or just use the line). Then use a ruler to measure the amount of slack >in the rotation of the throttle grip<. Check with the manual but I think it's 2-3mm, so aim for 2mm.

Once you've got the slack right you'll find the bike is not such a twitchy old sod!

One important thing when adjusting is, after any adjustment is made that with the engine running out of gear that you move the bars fully from side to side to make sure that the engine doesn't rev up.

What everyone here has said is on the button. I've had to adjust the slack on my '04 ST three times now (11K miles),but things finally seem to have settled down now. Lift the tank and use the adjusters there. I also did some minor cable rerouting which helps. Do you think we are twisting the throttles too hard?

you think its better to adjust the cables at the throttle bodies rather then near the throttle? I thought it was necessary to use the throttle body adjusters when there is too much slack to adjust with the others.

I just adjusted my excess throttle play with the adjuster built into the cable, just on the left side of the head stock. The adjustment took about 5 minutes and worked perfectly. The only tools necessary are 8 and 10 mm open-end wrenches.

As long as there is enough thread for adjustment on the cable, there's no reason to go under the tank. After all, this is why they designed in the adjuster.

And check to see the rubber grip isn't binding on the bar end.

My tech routinely installs a washer to prevent this happening; it isn't visible so must be in the cable housing.
