My Coocase snapped off when I hit a pothole today.
Disclaimer: I know this is worthless without pics, but my camera is at home and my coocase is at a local hotel waiting for me to pick it up. I'll have pics AND youtube video on Saturday for you.
So I'm getting on the highway when I hit a pothole and I felt the whole bike lurch funny. I slowed down for a second but everything felt okay. As I am speeding up the driver next to me is waving his arms. I turn around to check my topcase (the box on the back end of the bike pictured below) and it's gone.
So that bastard snapped right off and went tumbling down the road behind me. There is a ring around the old retaining nub on the top plate that popped out. The case itself was all rashed up when I finally recover it, some hotel bus driver kindly took it back to the hotel for me to pick up on Saturday since I can't get it back on the bike.
Fortunately I just need to take some photos for twisted throttle and they will replace it. The hole in the top plate where the rear mounting nub used to be is about 3"x2" in size. I had the top plate fitted to an SW Motech rack which appears to be in fine working order, except that it might have been that very minimalistic design that cause the springboard motion that eventually caused the locking nub on the top plate to break free of the rest of the plate.
I happened to have a mechanical engineer with me who assured me that he and I would come up with something to reinforce the next top plate, but I might go with another brand altogether if I can. I love coocase but that mount seems a bit flimsy.
Before you ask, I ride with the topcase nearly empty. At most the thing holds a cheap set of walmart rain gear and rain gloves. I use it to store my helmet and jacket when parked. Some folks put the top case over the passenger seat, I used the more rearward mounting method. I can't think of any other relevant info. Check your coocase mounting plates for stress cracks around the rear mounting nub. This is the 48L model.

Coocase there she goes; Bestem here we come. Just kidding but losing a $70 box off the back doesn't sound as bad.

After reading wardenross' thread on bestem topboxes I almost have to go with that. A metal mounting plate seems to be what I need. I just hate losing the capacity of the coocase. Being able to fit two helmets was so awesome I can't overstate the value.

What's in the box matters as well. When I go on my Yellowstone trip this summer, I don't want to feel like I've gotta carry my camera in the stock pannier.
On the edit: Do Givi's have metal plates? Shad cases have metal plates, right?

If you buy the Bestem 929 (I think that is the correct #), it's the knock-off for the Givi E460, 46 litres, two helmets. $70. Mine came with a small scuff and I said I'd keep it for $20 off. So I only paid $50 for it.

That's the best news I have had all day, it's a metal mounting bracket right? I'll miss the automatic unlocker device I have in the coocase, but maybe I can fit in onto the bestem

Reminds me of something that happened to me about 10 years ago when on a 1000km in a day ride.
I lost a pannier through a rusted mounting bolt on my old Honda CB 750K.
It was embarrassing as my clothes etc were littered down the road!

I am not sure about the removable plate between the box and the rack that you have, but the SW Motech quick release adapter plate for the Givi does not mate to the Bestem.
The mounting bracket is metal and I mounted mine permanently to the SW rack with rubber bushings in between to not scratch the rack. Werks just drilled new holes and bolted the mounting plate straight to the SW rack.
Since I don't use my box much and don't care for the look of the rack with the plate stuck to it, I bought a used extra grab rail and I just switch them out for "sport" and "tour" mode.

I have the Coocase wizard on my 09' and so far it has been great. It is the 36 liter model which I was told is the maximum recommended with the stock panniers by Triumph and Twisted Throttle. I actually hit a bone jarring pothole myself so badly I had to stop to check the front wheel and the Coocase was fine.
