Proper tune for mufflerectomy?
So partially out of boredom and the need for a challenge, I purchased a used muffler off ebay and did the rip and tear mufflerectomy. Its all back together, and not without some design challenges but it went together really well. I installed the muffler on the bike yesterday.
I must have done a pretty good job of packing the ceramic fibre blanket, because on first fire up, I found it almost as quiet as stock....which is true at idle. Twist the throttle a little, and it comes alive, a nice deep burbly, raspy sound. I took it for a spin yesterday and the bike runs really well...in fact, other than a little more popping and crackling on decel...I think it runs better then before.
So questions....which tune for my 08? or is there even a choice? I also understand that disabling the SAI, eliminates the popping on decel...which the bike has always done. Is this necessary, I actually kinda like it! And I don't think it does any harm. Will the bike run even better with the remapping? I suspect that its likely running a little lean right now...what else does the tune do, other than enrich the mixture?
On another note, I'd noticed OND's thread about the air box mod, both replacing, or eliminating the tight mesh (spark arrester) and cutting the snorkel back a little. Interestingly, my 08 has no such spark arrestor, just the filter with a tight screen over it...about the same as a window screen. The snorkel did get cut back though...just for good measure. It does seem to concentrate a lot or dirt square in the middle of the filter.
Thanks to anyone who can answer my tune question. And hope everyone is having a great early spring like we are here in Ontario!!

Nice work, all that volume of muffler with packing does a good job quieting down the noise.
Get the TOR tune downloaded at your local dealer, it should make it run even better. I would leave the SAI on, I love a bike that pops back under decel.

I figured my local dealer would know, just wanted to be slightly informed. I'd picked up on a few threads here and there about people getting the wrong tune.
Yeah, I like the pop under decel too! I'd also thought that it may come up on the ecu flash to disable, and the dealer would just do it. Tripple Ripple says his is gone now after getting the tune at the same dealer as I'm going to (the only one in town) maybe I just need to request before hand.

I jsut had mine done at lunch -- I installed a TOR yesterday, and was kind of digging the heavier burble and pop on decel..... after the download/re-map..... it's mostly gone. ... SAI you have to manually/physically take down, so it's not the tune download....but there is a tune load for a bike with an aftermarket pipe and SAI off of you go that route...
bike definitely has a little bit throatier growl at the low end, little mor rasp at the high, and feels "snappier"....
I may go the D&D route, if it's simply "not enough" after some time...

Yeah, I liked the decel sound with the stock muffler, its a little much with my modified unit though...verging on backfiring at times...really noticable in town with the sound bouncing off buildings! I am guessing that its the result of the bike running a little lean without the remap? And that with the remap, and SAI still on, it will be closer to stock?
So...how is it disabled, or enabled?
And I guess I should be asking for the remapping with SAI ''on'' then?
I really like the look of the D&D too! But for around a third of what they cost me, the mufflerectomy sounds great, and I'm guessing is on par performance wise. But in a few years...I might be looking for another change!
